A pair of local athletes are heading to Colorado next month to compete against the best skiers in the country.

Landon Allenby and Lucas Allenby, 12-year-old twins from Greenfield, began skiing at Berkshire East but have mostly taught themselves how to ski via videos online. They’ve dedicated themselves to the sport so much so that they built a mini terrain park in their yard during the winter to practice when they can't get to the mountain. The brothers also practice at Mount Snow in Vermont.

Both Landon and Lucas began competing competitively in the sport two years ago, qualifying for the United States of America Snowboard and Freeski Association (USASA) Nationals their first year, though were unable to attend. It happened again last year, where both qualified for nationals but were unable to make it to compete.

This year — after once again qualifying — the twins will be heading to Copper Mountain in Colorado on April 6 to compete in USASA Nationals in the age 11-12 group.

The pair qualified earlier this month in the Southern Vermont Series at Stratton Mountain, where Lucas took first and Landon placed third overall. Both will compete in the slopestyle and halfpipe competitions at Nationals. In their age group, Lucas is ranked No. 3 in the country in the halfpipe while Landon is in the top 10.

Matt Sullivan of Outer Limits in Greenfield is sponsoring both Landon and Lucas, making sure their equipment is in top shape for competitions.
