Thank you for publishing columnist Allen Young’s thorough and well researched article about dental hygienist Lynn Trinque. It is a human interest piece, but really sheds light on a profession that serves the public by educating and helping maintain their oral health but indirectly general health. This may inspire some people to seek often neglected dental services and certainly gives a good reminder of the importance of oral care. The hygienists are pivotal in dentistry as they form strong relationships with their patients and can facilitate the seeking of other needed healthcare by simply making a suggestion. I will share your article with my hygienists and use this as an opportunity to thank them for all they do. I am glad you decided to recognize this hygienist and the importance oral health care plays in one’s overall health.

As a periodontist who has served the Pioneer Valley community for over three decades and collaborated with hundreds of general dentists, I frequently observe it is the hygienists that identify periodontal disease or the need for a patient to seek specialty services. Thanks to your paper and Allen Young for bringing this well deserved recognition of the role hygienists play in their patients’ care.
