What's not right?

Editor, Daily News

During a recent visit to Market Basket in Athol, my wife overheard an older woman comment to her husband she would never again contribute to The Salvation Army because an African-American man dressed as Santa Claus was manning the red kettle there.

“That’s just not right,” the woman said. I would ask, what do you think is not right about it?

Santa Claus is representative of the kindness, the giving nature and the compassion for fellow human beings that the Christmas season exudes. Those attributes are found in persons of all colors, so why should Santa be seen in only one?

Unfortunately, the woman’s remark is also representative of something, albeit something much less desirable. That being the hate-mongering, racist and divisive philosophies currently taking center stage in this nation, but which have no place in a region that exemplifies the kindness, giving and compassion previously mentioned.
