WINCHENDON -- A Florida man was sentenced to death in a Clay County, Fla., court Wednesday in connection with the murder of a former Winchendon resident.
David Martin, 23, was convicted of first degree murder in November 2009 in the beating death of 23-year-old Jacey McWilliams in March 2008.
A Florida jury on Dec. 3 gave a 9-3 recommendation that Martin receive the death penalty.
Prosecutors stated that an appeal is likely. After a sentencing hearing, a defendant has 30 days to make appeals on grounds such as errors committed during the trial.
Although a death sentence is recommended, the presiding judge still had the option to sentence Martin to life imprisonment, but this is unlikely since a 9-3 recommendation is considered fairly strong.
McWilliams' body was found in the woods in Middleburg, Fla., on March 20, 2008. Police said Martin beat her to death with a hammer. She lived in Winchendon until the late 1990s when she moved to Jacksonville, Fla.
