PETERSHAM - Hope Grace (Hedley) Sherwood died Wednesday, July 2, 2014. The daughter of William John and Dorothy Hope (Lovell) Hedley was born in London, England on Jan. 15, 1924. She was educated in private schools and worked at Barkleys Bank before immigrating to the United States in 1952. After arriving in the states, she worked at Chubb Insurance Company and Airco both in New Jersey before retiring to Petersham in 1987.

"Grace" was an active member of the Petersham community and enjoyed getting involved in community activities and volunteered her time generously. She served as President and Treasurer of the Petersham Branch Alliance for many years, was a Corporator at the Petersham Memorial Library and was the Manager of the Petersham Antique Show. An avid gardener, she initiated along with a friend the annual Petersham Plant and Bake Sale which after 15 years still takes place each June to raise funds for the Petersham Library. She also volunteered for other events including the Annual Levee dance which was held in the town hall each February for over 100 years.

She is predeceased by her husband Richard C. Sherwood and her sister Dorothy Evelyn Van Dam. She leaves two sons John H. Sherwood and his wife Alicia A. of Barre, and Peter R. Sherwood and wife Mary of Easton, Penn.; grandchildren Alexandra Hope Sherwood and Dillon Wallace Sherwood of Barre; nieces and nephews along with many dear friends from Petersham; a town she truly loved.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014 at 11 a.m. in the Petersham Congregational Church. Burial will follow in East Street Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Petersham Memorial Library.
