I am a relative newcomer to this wonderful and scenic area. The idea was to retire here someday, but life being what it is those plans changed when I was laid off in March of 2009. Since we had purchased our "retirement" home in Orange in December 2008, we thought perhaps it was time to be here on a more permanent basis, and with a little luck find work. We arrived August 2009 and have really enjoyed this past year.

| | | 'He's Baaack!' | Parents nationwide are shipping freshmen off to college, and their minds are racing. Think of all the things that abruptly unoccupied bedroom could be used for now! A library, a study, an office, maybe a guest room. But don't reach just yet for that roll of lavender wallpaper to entomb the stuck-tight concert posters. There's a good chance your most frequent guest will be that kid of yours. Because multi-generational households -- demographic jargon for "He's baaack!" -- are becoming more common. | | | The Good Life | As the biennial legislative session for the 186th General Court came to an end on July 31, 2010, one piece of legislation stood out to me as a smart, common sense policy that I thought might be of interest to you. House Bill 4916, "An Act to Create a Silver Alert Community Response System," is a combination of three bills, filed by Senator Robert O'Leary and Representatives Angelo Puppolo and Kathi-Anne Reinstein, relative to providing protection for seniors and memory impaired individuals. | | | Keeping Social Security Successful | In July, trustees announced that for the first time since 1983 Social Security will pay out more in benefits, by $41 billion, than it receives in payroll taxes. That announcement, along with the long-term insolvency in Social Security funding, should serve as a warning that the nation's public retirement system is in need of repair. I know, I know, I've touched on this subject now and again before, but this time I'm going to go all the way with it. To begin with, let me be honest and admit that I'm wed to the TV screen as intently and frequently, as are most ten-year-old children. I'd find it difficult to go through less than four or five hours on any day without my television fix. Most of that time is devoted to programs, which concern the news in one way or another. It was not until recently that I realized that the commercials we are being forced to view seem to be in a race with the program to see which of the two would win the trophy for most time allowed during each half hour on the air. I haven't timed each commercial break with a stop-watch, but am aware that (depending on the time of day) those commercials, each running approximately thirty seconds in length, for a grand total of one and a half to two and a half minutes! Now, guessing that there are a total three to five of those pauses for commercials during each half hour of the day, we are forced to watch over ten minutes of product advertising for every half hour of whatever we tune in to see on TV every day! My right arm is substantially larger than my left, because of the constant demands that my remote (clicker) makes on it

The Quabbin Chapter of Ducks Unlimited will be holding their annual banquet on Sept. 12 at the Athol-Orange Elks Club. The event features a great meal, roast beef prepared by Mark Winters and Keith Morandi, and that alone makes the event a great take but it is the conservation work that makes the evening special. Ducks Unlimited has been protecting and preserving wetland habitat since the Dust Bowl era and that work has been the greatest conservation story in the nation's history. Driven by the work of volunteers, like those who make up the Quabbin Valley Chapter, DU strives to put the money raised in habitat work that will insure the next generation will hear the whistling wings of waterfowl each spring and fall.
