GARDNER – The dangerousness hearing for an Athol man accused of stabbing a female victim with a kitchen knife has been continued until Dec. 29.
Jack Newbrough, 25, made a brief appearance in Winchendon District Court in Gardner Monday morning, at which time the decision was made to continue the hearing.
Newbrough, of Athol, had been arraigned on three charges – assault and battery on a family/household member, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon with serious bodily injury, and assault with attempt to murder. At Monday’s hearing, the charge of assault with attempt to murder was dropped, though the other two remain.
Newbrough is being held without bail at the Worcester County Jail and House of Correction in West Boylston, pending his next court appearance.
Officers were dispatched to 5 School St. the morning of Thursday, Nov. 20, to find a female victim who police said was stabbed in the neck with a kitchen knife.
According to a statement written by Lt. Kevin Wolski and published on the Winchendon Police Facebook page, Officers Dylan Mei and James Maynard arrived on the scene and found the victim, who police said is related to Newbrough.
Court records indicate that when officers arrived they found the victim on the porch of the residence suffering from what police described as a “severe laceration” to her neck. The victim directed officers to the driveway of the home where Newbrough had locked himself inside a vehicle.
According to the police report, Maynard instructed Newbrough, who was sitting in the passenger seat, to unlock the door. Newbrough refused and proceeded to stab himself in the neck.
“Officers were able to break a window and gain access to the suspect who was eventually subdued with a Taser,” Wolski wrote in his statement. “[Newbrough] had superficial self-inflicted injuries and was arrested at the scene.”
The victim was transported to UMass/Memorial Hospital in Worcester, where she was treated for her wounds and released. Newbrough’s wounds were superficial, according to the police report, and he did not require transport for treatment of his injuries.
