Chris Waslaske won the award for most outstanding wrestler in the upper-weight classes at the Eagle Holiday Classic wrestling tournament, Saturday at Franklin Tech in Turners Falls.
Waslaske did not lose a match and beat Dylan Burke of Taconic, 9-2, to take first place in the 182-pound weight class for the Athol wrestling team.
It was Waslaske’s second victory over Burke this season. Burke is a defending Western Massachusetts Division 3 champion.
“He (Waslaske) did a really great job of dictating the tempo of the match,” Athol coach Brandon Jeffrey said. “It was more decisive this time.”
Joey Gray had solid tournament for the Red Raiders, placing second at 160 pounds.
The Red Raiders were 11th out of 20 teams.
King Phillip 54, Mahar 27; Mahar 51, Shepard Hill 22; Walpole 52, Mahar 30 — Jeff Kidwell (106), Jon Mahony (113) and Luke Chiodo (126) had wins for the Senators against King Phillip.
The match took place at a dual-meet tournament at Monty Tech on Saturday. The Senators were fifth out of 10 teams.
The meet was highlighted by a 3-0 day by Todd Chiasson at 160 pounds.
Chiasson won by fall (5:02) for Mahar at 160 pounds, while Peter Tattan added another win by fall (0:14) at 170.
Chiasson won a 15-12 decision over Shepard Hill’s Owen Ayotte at 160 pounds.
Mahony won his 113 match against Shepard Hill by fall (0:57).
Gracin Bisceglia was the winner at 195 by fall (1:26).
Walpole 52, Mahar 30 – Kidwell got his second win at 106, but the Senators fell to Walpole.
Chiasson defeated Ryan Piersiak by fall (3:45).
Justin DiDiego picked up a win for Mahar at 145 pounds, winning by fall (4:49) over John Shea.
Tattan (170) and Bisceglia also (195) also won against Walpole.
The Athol indoor track & field team had competitors at the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association Speed Classic at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston on Saturday.
In the top performance of the day, Mason Barrieau placed 12th (8.79 seconds) in the 55-hurdles among 44 runners from small schools all over the state.
Grace Dufour had a 33rd-place finish (46.77) among 159 runners in the 300-meter dash.
Dufour’s run was a personal record, and it qualified her for the Boston Holiday Challenge on Friday.
The 4×400 relay team of Cullen Burbee, Parker Deleo, Dennis St. Jean and Barrieau qualified for the PVIAC championships with a seventh-place finish (3:53.71).
Deleo also qualified for the Boston Holiday Challenge with his 66th-place (41.14) finish in the 300, which was a personal record.
