School Roundup: Ares tallies twice for Franklin Tech girls soccer

Rylee Ares and Jocelyn Crowningshield both scored for the Franklin Tech girls soccer team in a 3-2 win over Mohawk Trail  in Buckland on Thursday afternoon. 

Ares picked up two goals for the Eagles (2-6, 2-9) in the Pioneer South match.

“I feel like it boosts your confidence a little bit,” Ares said of the two-goal performance. “It motivates you to push yourself harder and get goals.”

The Eagles dealt with strong goalie play from Lillian Van Vleet, who had 17 saves for the Warriors.

“We definitely left a lot of opportunities on the field,” Franklin Tech coach Dan Prasol said. “I got to give hats off to Mohawk. Those girls played down a player for an entire half. Their energy, team work and positivity is admirable.”

Due to an injury, the Warriors (0-12, 0-7 PS) finished the game with 10 players.

The Warriors picked up their first goal of the season on a corner kick to take the lead in the eighth minute.

Taylor Loomis sent a corner kick to Sage Spitzer, who deflected it in for Mohawk.

“It was a really uplifting moment,” Spitzer said. “We’ve had a pretty hard season. It really helped our team get out of that low that we’ve been in and realize we can do it.”

The Eagles scored the next three goals, including a tally in the final seconds of the half, when Ares scored on a feed from Jocelyn Crowningshield.

Instead of a lead at halftime, the Warriors faced a 1-1 match at intermission.

“They gave the best effort,” Mohawk coach Steve Tomi said. “They came to play and played really well. We have a few games left and we don’t know who will show up. But whoever does we will give our best shot.”

Crowningshield fed Ares again early in the second half to give Franklin Tech the 2-1 lead.

Gabriella Castagna then set up a goal with a long send from around midfield that found the feet of Crowningshield, who scored to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead.

Loomis scored for Mohawk on a direct kick from close to 40 yards out. The goal gave the Warriors a boost, but they could not get another chance at the net.

“I was excited,” Loomis said. “I was practicing that and I really wanted to do it in a game. I was glad it finally turned out well.”  

Van Vleet played in net for the Warriors in place of Amelia Rowehl, who missed the game with an injury.

“It’s kind of scary because I haven’t been practicing as much,” Van Vleet said. “Amelia is a great player. It’s a lot of reorienting myself.”

Van Vleet made several key stops in the late stages, including a charging save on Crowningshield on a breakaway. 

Spitzer and Liliana Manley then defended an open net after a Franklin Tech rebound led to consecutive shots by Isabelle Duga.

Emily Merritt made three saves for the Eagles.

Volleyball

Frontier gets some payback

The Frontier Regional volleyball team beat Amherst Regional, 3-1, in South Deerfield. 

The Red Hawks lost to the Hurricanes earlier this season. Set scores were 25-14, 25-21, 10-25 and 25-12 in the Eastern league match. 

It was “Pack The House” night for Frontier. 

Jalen Sullivan and Olivia Deane let the hitting attack for Frontier with 16 kills and 21 kills respectively.

Setter Olivia Rosewarne had 22 assists and added eight digs for Frontier.

Sydney Scanlon added another 12 assists.

Pioneer Valley Christian 3, Athol 0 – Lexi Forte had four aces, two kills and seven assists but the Red Raiders were swept on the road by the Eagles.

Set scores were 25-8, 25-12 and 25-16.

Katelyn Mahan chipped in with five kills, three aces and five digs. 

Field hockey 

Comeback falls short for Franklin Tech

The Franklin Tech field hockey team scored with six minutes left to pull within a goal, but could not complete the comeback against Amherst in a 4-3 loss on the road in Tri-County play.

Logan Addison netted a hat trick for the Eagles.

Kyleigh Baleno made seven saves. 

Mohawk Trail 0, Mahar Regional 0 – Defense ruled at the Woodward Complex in a tie between the Warriors and the Senators in Bi-County play.

The Warriors had 10 shots on goal compared to four for the Senators. 

Isabella Bisceglia made stopped all 10 shots for Mahar. 

Mohawk keeper Maddie Gorrell made four saves.

Athol 0, Palmer 0 – The Red Raiders had to settle for a road draw against the Panthers in Tri-County play.

Sam Kenniff made three saves for the Red Raiders.  Athol had 12 shots, and 12 corners against the Panthers but could not find the net. 

Boys soccer

Cole connects with Lashtur

Garrett Cole found Sam Lashtur twice in the first half, lifting the Franklin Tech boys soccer team to a 2-1 road win over Putnam.

Lasthtur scored on the feeds from Cole in the third and 24th minute for the Eagles.

Matt Regnier stopped eight shots in net for Franklin Tech. 

South Hadley 3, Athol 1 – Bryce King scored a first-half goal on a header but the Red Raiders fell on the road in Schmid play.

Colby Soltysik assisted on the goal.

Mark Ferrari made 12 saves filling in for starter Casey Mason.

Greenfield 3, Sci-Tech 2 –  The Green Wave took the lead four minutes into the game  on a goal by Caleb Duncan and held off the Cybercats to pick up the home win in a McGrath league match up. 

Theodore Popusoi scored twice for Greenfield, with Crescens Iavorschi picking up an assist.

Alex Carballo made five saves for the Green Wave and did not let up a goal before coming out in the second half.  

Granby 1, Pioneer Valley Regional 0 – The Panthers found everything except the back of the net in a road loss to the Rams.

Pioneer hit the crossbar twice, and dinged the post two times in offensive attacks.  

Ryan Potter made five saves in net for Pioneer in the McGrath league match.

Nolan Sullivan scored for the Rams.  

Golf

Eagles stay hot, win 14th straight 

Mike McGoldrick carded a 39 for the Franklin Tech golf team in a 24-0 win over Sabis International at Thomas Memorial Golf Course in Turners Falls on Thursday.

McGoldrick beat Colin Consedine, 4-0, at the No. 1 spot. 

Alex Sulda (41), Jacob Shaw (46), Ryan Artus (46) and Nate Sciandra (45) all picked up wins.

Jason Smith won by forfeit at No. 6, shooting a 45 for the Eagles (14-0).

Northampton 19, Mohawk 5 – Ben Thompson and Sam Thompson both shot a 51 for the Warriors in a loss at Edge Hill Golf Course.

Ben Thompson lost to Camille Richmond, 3-1, at the No. 1 spot.

Camille Richmond is a WMass champion for the Blue Devils.

Easthampton 22, Turners Falls 2 – Joey Mosca’s 46 was the best round of the match for the Thunder in a loss to the Eagles at Wyckoff Country Club in Holyoke. 

Mosca lost to Tyler Colby at No. 1.

Aidan Bailey shot a 48 which was the next best round for Turners Falls. 

Monson 23.5, Greenfield 0.5 – The Green Wave ran into a tough Mustang team on the road in a loss at Quaboag Country Club.

Gabe Larouche had the best card for the Wave with a  50 but lost to Mason Dumas at No. 1, 4-0.

Jake Cote shot a 52 at No. 2.
