ATHOL — Pete’s Tire Barns and MBW/Seaman Paper Company, of Orange, recently funded an upgrade of the lighting throughout the Athol Salvation Army Community Center.
New LED lighting was installed both inside and to the exterior of the building and the upgrade is expected to save the organization $300 to $400 a month in electrical costs. The lower cost will assist the local branch of the Salvation Army in continuing their charitable efforts throughout the North Quabbin region. These efforts include free weekly meals every Tuesday which are open to the public, Sunday worship services (10:45 AM) along with relief efforts for those in need following disasters and donations of clothing and food throughout the year.
This past year alone, the Athol Corps of the Salvation Army provided hundreds of local residents with food, clothing, fuel assistance and other needs, largely due to donations received from the community.
Future needed upgrades include the replacement of ceiling tiles in the halls, and a significant overhaul of the restrooms to make them handicapped accessible, however additional funds will need to be raised to make these renovations possible. Those willing to assist with a monetary donation are encouraged to contact the Salvation Army at 978-249-8111.
The Athol Salvation Army Community Center is located at 107 Ridge Ave.
The office is open for walk-in service Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to Noon, and by appointment 1 to 3 p.m.
