Pope Francis 4, Frontier 1 — Three matches were very much in doubt, but host Pope Francis won two of those three tilts and ultimately captured a 4-1 win over Frontier in a Tri-County League North girls tennis match, Monday.

The Red Hawks nabbed their lone win at No. 2 doubles. The team of Sophia Patten and Erin Senn shook off a first-set loss to knock off Pope Francis’ Madelyn Letendre and Gabrielle Letendre, 2-6, 6-3, 10-4.

Frontier’s Tori Speth also played a three-set match at No. 1 singles, where Pope Francis’ Elizabeth Goncalves captured a 6-2, 5-7, 10-3 win.

At first doubles, Frontier’s Cassidy Bardwell and Coleman Hartner battled but fell short in a 7-5, 6-4 loss to Madeline Ferreira and Mikala Messier of Pope Francis.

“We played a lot of close matches,” Frontier coach James Fitzgerald said. “I’m pretty happy with the way everyone played today. Pope Francis has some players with a bit more experience but our kids worked really hard.”
