ATHOL – The organizing committee of Green Clean Athol is hoping the momentum and success of its first community spring cleanup in which nearly 100 volunteers of all ages participated will continue at its Fall Cleanup Nov. 8 through Nov. 10.
Committee member Pat Roix said the follow up to the Earth Day cleanup will be a bit different in that “everybody is on their own” with a team. “The idea is to have people gather a team of family, friends and or neighbors and pick an area that needs to be cleaned up,” and to take a picture of the team in action so it can be posted on the GCA Facebook page. “What we’re feeling is that it’s harder at this time of year to get at stuff,” she said. Volunteers are invited to choose an area of town that needs some TLC and to spend a couple of hours cleaning up the chosen area.
A town truck will be parked behind the Millers River Environmental Center, 100 Main St. that Friday evening to Sunday after noon for volunteers to dispose of the trash they collect.
Heidi Strickland, who coordinated the spring project, said ideally they would like for people to adopt a neighborhood to take care of.
Roix said cleanups are just a part of what GCA does. Another goal is to continue to educate the community on how to recycle, and the formation of a sub-committee is being considered.
The group is always looking to get more volunteers to help with activities, Strickland said. Currently, there about 10 to 12 people who attend the meetings held at the Environmental Center.
The Second Annual Spring Cleanup and Celebration will be held Saturday, April 25, 2020.
