A state title is coming back to Four Rivers Charter School.
Taking on Lexington in the boys Ultimate state championship game, the Otters recovered from an 8-6 halftime deficit to pull off a 15-11 victory on Monday at Lexington High School.
Dar Newshore dished a critical assist to Gabe Rhodes to set up the game-winning goal by Henry Zwart for Four Rivers.
The Otters won via a well-balanced offense, led by the strong disc handling skills of Ben Yu. Avani Richardson, Aidan DeLorenzo, Gavin Crean, Juden Retzlaff, Jonah Goldstein and Muiris Loubski-Lonergan all scored in the win for the Otters.
Four Rivers’ girls Ultimate team booked a spot in the state championship game on Monday, picking up an 11-9 win over Sharon in the semifinals. The Otters move on to take on Lexington in the championship game.
Franklin Tech 4, Pioneer 3 — A three-run third inning from the Eagles proved to be the difference as the Eagles pulled out a 4-3 independent win on the road against the Panthers in a low-scoring affair in Northfield on Monday.
Lauren Ross struck out six batters in the win for Franklin Tech (14-2), adding a hit at the plate. Kaitlin Trudeau smacked a double and a triple, Lilly Ross had a pair of hits and RBIs, Lauren Ross had a hit and two RBIs, Keira Stevens hit a double and Mackenzie Martel and Faith Smith each hit safely in the victory for the Eagles.
Hailey Haughey drilled two triples in the loss for Pioneer (3-9), Charlotte Kahler recorded a double while Kensey Gibson, Tayla Sadlowski, Laura Kahler and Aiden Wall each had a hit.
Sofia Holden struck out six in the circle for the Panthers.
Ware 3, Athol 0 — Luke Inniss had an ace and three kills but the Bears fell on the road, 25-19, 25-17, 25-13, to Ware on Monday in an independent match.
Caleb Fitzgerald and Holden Girouard each had an ace while Ray Castine had a kill for Athol (6-5).
Frontier 98, Franklin Tech 24 — Jack Vecellio’s impressive season continued on Monday in Turners Falls.
The junior set another school record, as he crossed the 400-meter hurdles finish lines in 57.2 seconds, breaking Phaelon Koski’s mark of 57.5 from 2019.
Vecellio also took first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.5 seconds to help lead the Redhawks to a 98-24 triumph over the Eagles.
Ian Burt was the winner in the triple jump (35 feet, eight inches) and the 400 (57.8) for Frontier while Jesse Kurkolonis won the javelin (119-4) and 100 hurdles (18.2).
Rounding out the winners for the Redhawks was Jackie Phong in the shot put (115-11), Luke Howard in the mile (5:23.2), Erich Brown in the 800 (2:15.2), Miles Ferreira in the 200 (25.2) and Amory Maxey in the 2-mile (13:12.5). Frontier’s 4×100 relay (50.2) finished first while the Redhawks also took the 4×400 (4:21.3).
Ryan Duclos took the shot put with a toss of 38 feet, 1.5 inches for Franklin Tech while Brayden McCourt was the winner in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, five inches.
