Fridays: Early bird birding with Jeff Johnstone

ATHOL — Friday, May 6, 13, 20, at 7 a.m., “Early Bird Birding with Jeff Johnstone.” Join Johnstone at the Environmental Center (100 Main St., Athol) before heading out to explore the North Quabbin area for spring migrant birds. These are great events for the novice birder to learn from one of our best field naturalists. Come for as long as your schedule allows. Severe weather cancels. Info: Jeff Johnstone, 978-249-9052. May 7: Phillipston townwide yard sale

PHILLIPSTON — The Phillipston Townwide Yard Sale is being held on Saturday, May 7, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Pick up your map of participating homes on the grassy common in the center of Phillipston.

May 7: Worm composting workshop

ATHOL — Join the Athol Public Library on Saturday, May 7, at 11 a.m. to learn how to make great garden soil with worm composting. Julia Latady will present on composting using worm bins and using created soil to plant greens. She will have some bins and worms for sale. May 7: Composting workshop

NEW SALEM — The New Salem Public Library is sponsoring a composting workshop on Saturday, May 7, 1 p.m., at the New Salem Community Garden (located behind the Stowell Building), 19 South Main St. Meghan Siudzinski from the Franklin Conservation District will be sharing the ins and outs of basic composting techniques for home gardens. If you want to participate in the hands-on portion, gloves are recommended.

May 7: Hike Mt. Grace

WARWICK — The 22nd annual Ned Green Scholarship Fund Memorial Hike will take place Saturday, May 7, 10 a.m. to noon. Meet at Oscar Ohlson parking lot, base of Mt. Grace, opposite Highway Garage Road in Warwick.

Come prepared with tick awareness, water, snacks, sturdy shoes. Severe weather cancels event.

May 7: Dance

WINCHESTER, N.H. — The ELMM Community Center, 21 Durkee St., Winchester, N.H., will host a dance with live music by “Champaign Jam” May 7 from 7 to 10:30 p.m. Refreshments served, 50/50 raffle, (no potluck). Everyone welcome. $10 members / $12 nonmembers.

May 10: N. Orange Grange program

ORANGE — North Orange Grange will have a program by Joe Young talking about his hike on the Appalachian Trail. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10. The program will be at the Community Church of North Orange and Tully, 48 Main St. In addition to Joe’s talk, the Grange will present a Quilts of Valor quilt to a deserving veteran. Over the last several years, the Grange has presented four deserving veterans with quilts to show their appreciation of their service to our country. The recipient this year will be Edward Day.

May 11: North Quabbin Cruisers

ATHOL — North Quabbin Cruisers Night is set for Wednesday, May 11, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Market Basket #78 in Athol.

May 11: ABNC meeting in person and on Zoom

ATHOL — On Wednesday, May 11, 7 p.m., “Bat, Falcon, Social Flycatcher oh my!” an Athol Bird and Nature Club presentation, will be held in person and on Zoom.

Club member Ernie Leblanc will guide attendees on a recap of a whirlwind and successful adventure in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas.

May 12: ‘A Musical Journey’

ATHOL — On Thursday, May 12, the Athol Council on Aging will host singer/entertainer Tommy Rull, who will perform his show “A Musical Journey Through The Years.” Lunch begins at noon with the show to follow. May 14: Circle of Song Concert

BARRE — The Circle of Song will hold its 20th annual Spring Concert on Saturday, May 14, at 7 p.m. at the Barre Town Hall (corner of Exchange and Mechanic Streets.) Everyone is invited for refreshments at the end of the concert.

May 15: Pancake Breakfast

ORANGE — Rolling Thunder Vermont 1 will put on a Pancake Breakfast Sunday, May 15, from 8 to 11 a.m. at the American American Legion, Daniel Shay Highway, Orange.

The menu is pancakes, sausage and scrambled eggs for $8.

May 17: Woodsman Rifle and Pistol Club Meeting

ATHOL — The Annual Meeting of the Woodsman Rifle and Pistol Club, Inc. will be held Tuesday, May 17 at 7 p.m. at the club, which is located at 390 Doe Valley Road in Athol.

May 19: J.R. Greene on Calvin Coolidge

GARDNER — The Gardner Museum presents Athol author J.R. Greene and his newest book (“Calvin Coolidge in 100 Objects,” published fall 2021) about the man who graduated from Amherst College and went on to lead the nation as the 30th president of the US. It is J.R. Greene’s 23rd book and fourth pertaining to Calvin Coolidge.
