In Tuesday’s Recorder, I learned that on this day — Feb. 10, 1936 — the Nazi Reichstag enacted a law granting the gestapo absolute authority and exempting it from judicial review. This allowed the secret police to operate beyond the reach of the courts, detain individuals without charge, and suppress dissent. I couldn’t help but think about recent actions by our own federal immigration enforcement agencies and the troubling parallels to this chilling period in history.
Today, Congress is debating the future of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), including proposals for increased oversight and accountability. This is a critical moment for citizens to engage with their elected representatives and advocate for the preservation and strengthening of democratic norms and the rule of law. History may not repeat itself exactly, but it often rhymes. Let us ensure that we do not echo the mistakes of the past by allowing unchecked authority to erode the freedoms we hold dear.
