Greenfield graduate MacKenzie Paulin did not waste any time jumping into an important role for the Merrimack College softball team in her freshman season with the Warriors.
Paulin made her first start for Merrimack in Shippensburg, Pa. on Sunday. In six innings, Paulin allowed two hits and two earned runs in a 2-0 loss to Mount St. Mary’s.
The freshman registered her first collegiate save against Cornell on March 1 in Towson, Md. In three innings of work, Paulin gave up an earned run with two strikeouts, two talks and four hits. Merrimack (2-9, 0-2 MAAC) downed the Big Red, 8-4.
In her first appearance of the season against Towson, Paulin pitched two thirds of an inning in relief while striking out a batter in a 4-2 loss.
Wrestling
At the New England Championships, Dillon Laffond made it to the consolation Round of 4 in the 285 bracket for the Franklin Tech wrestling team. Wrestlers from all over New England gathered at Providence Career & Technical Academy in Rhode Island on Saturday and Sunday.
In the Round of 32, Laffond lost to Jacob Palermo of East Lyme/Norwich Tech by decision (8-1). Laffond then pinned (1:38) Nicholas Esparo of Amity in the Consolation Round of 16. Laffond picked up two more wins in the consolation bracket. The last win came against Charles Medas by decision (1-0).
Ava Eddy took a loss in the Round of 16 of the 152 pound bracket for Franklin Tech. Matilda Tote of Bunnell pinned (2:35) Eddy in the second period. Eddy could not find a win in the consolation bracket.
Jocelyn Antes of Frontier Regional lost by fall (5:38) to Delaney Frost of Noble in the Round of 16 of the 126 pound bracket. Antes went to the consolation bracket and defeated Layla McGarvin of St. Johnsbury by fall (4:19). In the consolation Round of 8, Antes lost a 9-2 decision to Maisa Allen of Otter Valley.
Girls basketball
Longmeadow 22, Frontier 21 — A fourth quarter comeback came up just short for the Frontier fifth and sixth Suburban team in a playoff loss to the Lancers on March 4. The Redhawks had the ball with 16 seconds left but could not get a good shoot off in the closing seconds. Frontier finishes its season at 13-3.
Boys basketball
Greenfield 52, Frontier 40 — Lobsang Jamyang’s 24 points sent to the fifth and sixth grade Suburban team to a road win over the Redhawks on March 1. Grabiel Ortiz added 10 points. The win put the Green Wave into the finals against Hampshire Regional.
Greenfield 53, Belchertown 39 — The undefeated seventh and eighth grade Green Wave Suburban team moved past the Orioles on the road and into the finals on March 4. Casey Burke led the way with 15 points. Wes Darling had six points and six rebounds for the Green Wave. Xaviey Reynolds, Xavier Woodward and Jonathan Bones each added six points for the Green Wave. The Green Wave play Turners Falls in the finals.
Berkshire Highlands Pentathlon
The 13th Berkshire Highlands Pentathlon will be held Saturday, March 28, at Berkshire East Mountain Resort in Charlemont. Registration is now open for all categories; Bravehearts, who do the entire course solo, family teams, and teams of 2-5. Discounted entry fees for family teams and entrants under 19-years old.
The five events are a 4.5-mile trail run, 18-mile road cycle ride, 2+ mile paddle, 2-mile adventure run and a climb up, ski down leg. Online discounted registration is at BikeReg.com. The event is in need of volunteers. This year’s benefactor is the Good Neighbors Food Pantry.
Shelburne Falls Bowling Alley
Here are the scores for the rollers in Shelburne Falls for week ending March 6. In Sunday Scotch Doubles, Scott Schneider and Kendall Schneider rolled a 113 in high single and a 309 in high triple.
In Monday’s Mixed League, Missy Finn scored a 107 in high single and a 276 in high triple. Paul Hollings rolled a 115 in high single while Kyle Leger carded a 315 in high triple. In Wednesday’s Mixed League, Liz Sears rolled a 107 in high single while Cherie Semanie scored a 278 in high triple. Erich Price rolled a 113 in high single and a 316 in high triple.
