SOUTH DEERFIELD Carter Miller pitched seven strong innings for the Frontier Regional baseball team on its way to a 5-1 win over Greenfield in Suburban East play on Wednesday afternoon.

Miller took a no-hitter into the sixth inning for Frontier (5-2, 2-1). He wasn’t thinking about the individual accomplishment in the league win over the Wave (3-3, 2-2).

“It’s not my main priority,” Miller said. “When I am out there pitching, I am making sure they are not scoring a lot. I don’t care about no-hitters. I am not trying to ego boost myself by posting online about all that stuff like other teams do. I just play my game, and I know my teammates have my back.”

There was some turbulence in the sixth inning for Miller. Arthur Fitzpatrick had an RBI single in the inning for the Green Wave. Greenfield had additional baserunners due to errors, but Miller pitched his way out of it. Frontier coach Chris Williams had some thoughts about going to the bullpen but stuck with Miller into the seventh inning.

“It’s good to know he has the trust in me to do that,” Miller said. “There’s not much more you can ask for. Coach that believes in you is as good as it gets.”

Miller had five strikeouts with a walk for the Redhawks. Frontier got some timely hitting to pull away from Greenfield. The hits were sporadic but effective in big spots.

“That was really great to see the offense get going,” Williams said. “Come up with some clutch hits late in the game…It was total team effort. This was the best hitting game we’ve had.”

Jack Cusson went 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBI for the Redhawks. Braiden Dion added a double with a sacrifice fly (RBI) for Frontier. Cusson’s RBI triple gave Frontier a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Frontier scored another run when Brady Poreda (RBI) bunted, allowing Cusson to scamper home.

“The first runs were a huge momentum shift,” Cusson said. “With Carter (Miller) on the mound we knew he was going to lock it down.”

Greenfield got a nice start from Fitzpatrick, who pitched into the sixth inning. Fitzpatrick gave up five hits with a strikeout and five walks. It was a 2-1 ballgame going into the sixth inning when Fitzpatrick lost some control. The main problem with the Green Wave was the lack of offense.

“(Carter) Miller pitched a good game,” Greenfield coach Tom Suchanek said. “We had some opportunities, not a hell of lot of them, we just didn’t capitalize. They had opportunities and took advantage of them…but you are not going to beat many teams with one hit. Guess we have a little bit more work to do.”

Fitzpatrick finished 1-for-3 with an RBI for Greenfield

Pioneer 11, Athol 4 — Brody Welcome had two hits and three RBI for the Panthers in the Suburban East win over the Bears in Tool Town. Evan Tsipenyuk pitched a complete game for Pioneer (1-4, 1-2). Tsipenyuk gave up eight hits and four runs but struck out five. Aaron Meuse and Tsipenyuk both had two RBI for Pioneer.

Ethan Heuer went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for the Bears (0-5, 0-3). Oliver Johnson added another double with an RBI. Eli Wein had two hits for Athol.

Hopkins Academy 4, Franklin Tech 1 The Eagles lost to the Golden Hawks in a Suburban East match up in Hadley. Nick Prasol and George Gutierrez Jr. had hits for the Eagles (4-1, 2-1). Prasol had a double before an RBI single by Gutierrez in the top of the first. Mason Bassett pitched six innings, scattering nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts
