Phil Lissier’s May 20 My Turn ” The loss of shame” seemed quite poignant as he relates to Rawn Fulton’s seriously acclaimed 1973 documentary about subsistence farming right here, in this area, “Root Hog or Die.” As it happens, the Buckland Historical Society is partnering with the Franklin Land Trust and having a professional showing of a completely restored/enhanced version at our now fully restored 1780 Wilder Homestead Barn Museum on Friday, Aug. 14 at 7 p.m. The film showing will be introduced by Rawn himself with discussion and refreshments to follow. By the way, The film’s title comes from one of the old Yankee Farmer’s late winter resolve that there’s really not enough food to feed his family, let alone feed the hogs. He then turns ’em out to pasture and suggests to ’em woefully, “Root hog or die.” Visit www.bucklandmasshistory.org for details and to see photos of the 1780 barn’s restoration.
