Athol Fire Department to present service awards at memorial ceremony

ATHOL – The Fire Department will hold its fifth annual Firefighter Memorial this Sunday, June 2.
Ceremonies will begin at 10 a.m. at the Uptown Fire Station, 2251 Main St.
Fire Chief Joseph Guarnera and his department will be joined by state Sen. Jo Comerford, state Rep. Susannah Whipps, Town Manager Shaun Suhoski and members of the Selectboard.
Firefighters receiving Service Career Awards include Capt. Andrew Soltysik and Firefighter Kevin Kaczmarczyk, who will be recognized for 25 years of service. Capt. James Ferguson will be recognized for 15 years of service and firefighters Andrew Bond, Ian Hogan and Sean Morris for five years.
The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services Call Service Award will be presented to Firefighter Todd Bowdridge for five years of service. Lt. Greggory Kimball will receive a service certificate for 10 years.
Members of the Athol Fire Department Staffing Advisory Committee will receive special recognition for their efforts to pass a Proposition 2 ½ override which will provide funding to hire three additional paramedic/EMT/firefighters. Members of the committee include Finance and Warrant Advisory Committee Chair Ken Duffy, who also chaired the advisory panel; Selectboard members Rebecca Bialecki and Brian Dodge, Suhoski, FWAC member Mike Butler, Capital Program Committee members Jim Smith and Gary Deyo, Jeff Thiem with the Department of Public Works, Fire Chief Guarnera, Fire Dept. Captain Jeff Parker, Athol Firefighters Union President Travis Brailey, and Kaczmarczyk.
Recipients of the Citizen Recognition and the Firefighter of the Year awards will be announced at Sunday’s memorial, along with those firefighters receiving commendation pins.
