High schools: MacKenzie Paulin tossed no-hitter in Greenfield softball’s win over Athol

Greenfield ace MacKenzie Paulin had her best stuff going in the circle on Wednesday against Athol.
The sophomore tossed a five-inning no-hitter, striking out 15 of the 16 batters she faced and walking just one as the Green Wave pulled away with a 15-0 independent victory at Vets Field.
Amber Bergeron led the way at the plate for the Green Wave, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and four RBIs. Carly Blanchard had a pair of hits and RBIs, Anna Bucala knocked a single and a triple while Ellis Benitez cracked a single that brought in two runs in the win.
Jaylynn Chapalonis struck out two in four innings work in the circle for the Bears.
Franklin Tech 12, Hoosac 0 (6) — The Eagles hit the ball hard on Wednesday in Cheshire, with Hannah Gilbert blasting a pair of home runs and a base hit that brought in a total of five RBIs, while Cordelia Guerin and Kait Trudeau also put balls over the fence as Franklin Tech earned an independent win in six innings.
Trudeau added a triple, two singles and brought in three runs while Guerin added a single and tallied two RBIs in the victory. Kendra Campbell knocked an RBI double, Kylee Gamache had two hits including a double, Shelby O’Leary tripled, Keira Stevens doubled while Kyra Goodell and Lily Ross hit safely for the Eagles.
Gilbert allowed just one hit in the circle for Tech.
Turners 24, Smith Academy 1 (5) — Madi Liimatainen recorded three hits that brought in five runs to help lift the Thunder to their first win of the season, knocking off the Falcons in Hatfield in an independent game.

Holly Myers tallied two hits and an RBI, Janelle Massey had a pair of hits and Cadi Wozniak and Madisyn Dietz each hit safely in the victory.
Liimatainen pitched the first three innings, striking out eight and not allowing a hit. Myers tossed the final two innings, striking out five and giving up just one hit.
Greenfield 10, Hampshire 7 — It wasn’t looking good for the Green Wave heading into the bottom of the fourth inning Wednesday.
Greenfield trailed the visiting Raiders 7-1, but sprung to life by putting two runs on the board to cut the deficit to 7-3 going into the fifth.
That’s when the Green Wave bats came alive, scoring five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take an 8-7 lead. Greenfield tacked two on in the sixth while Preston LaFleur, who came on in the fifth, tossed three scoreless innings, striking out five, not surrendering a hit and walking just two to allow the Green Wave to pull off the comeback victory at Vets Field.
“We started hitting the ball,” Greenfield coach Tom Suchanek said. “They made some mistakes. Preston pitched very well.”
Caleb Thomas had a big hit that drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth. Malik Moore added an RBI single, Deven Dubie had a pair of hits and scored three runs, John Marchefka singled and Michael Pierce finished with two hits including a double in the Suburban League West victory.
Frontier 16, Athol 6 — The Redhawks exploded for five runs in the second and tacked four runs on in the seventh to pull away with a Suburban League West triumph over the Bears in Athol on Wednesday.
Wyatt Edes cracked a pair of hits for Frontier while Eathon Bryant and Brady Poreda hit safely in the win.
Shea Brennan cracked three hits for Athol. Riley Young had a single and a double, Aedan Erickson doubled while Logan Cormier, Alex Lavigne, Gabe Hume, Ethan Heuer and Oliver Johnson hit safely in the loss.
