H.S. baseball and softball: Turners softball takes control of FCL West with win over Greenfield

The Turners Falls softball team took control of the Franklin County League West on Monday. 

Taking on rival Greenfield, Madi Liimatainen struck out 11 and held the Green Wave to five hits. The Thunder put four on the board in the fourth to take command of the game, leading to a 10-2 victory at Vets Field. 

The win puts Turners (10-6, 7-1) a game ahead of Greenfield (12-3, 5-2) in the FCL West standings. 

Holly Myers knocked two hits and drove in four runs, Cadi Wozniak doubled to bring in two runs while Mia Marigliano drove in two runs with a base hit for the Thunder. 

Ainslee Flynn had three hits including a double while Carly Blanchard and Amber Bergeron hit safely for the Green Wave. Paulin went the distance in the circle for Greenfield, striking out 11. 

Franklin Tech 11, Mohawk Trail 1 — Hannah Gilbert and Kylee Gamache got the Eagles going with back-t0-back home runs in the second inning, helping lead Franklin Tech to a Franklin County League East victory over the Warriors in Turners on Monday. 

Gamache added a single, a double and drove in three runs, Lilly Ross knocked three hits and drove in a run, Keira Stevens tallied a hit and two RBIs, Kait Trudeau finished with two hits while Kendra Campbell hit safely for the Eagles. Gilbert got the win in the circle, striking out 18 and allowing just one hit. 

Addie Loomis had that lone hit for Mohawk Trail, breaking up the no-hitter in the sixth. Riley Giard scored the Warriors’ lone run while also striking out two in the circle.

Mount Greylock 6, Frontier 5 — The Redhawks put four runs on the board in the top of the seventh to take a 5-3 lead, but the Mounties answered with a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame to force extras. 

Malia Koffi hit a walkoff solo homer for Greylock in the bottom of the eighth to lift the Mounties to a Franklin County League West win over visiting Frontier on Monday. 

Ashley Taylor and Hailey Hutkoski got on with singles to open the seventh for the Redhawks. Skyler Steele, who hit a home run in the fourth, drilled a two-RBI single to tie the game at three. Frontier scored on a pair of passed balls to take a 5-3 lead. 

Liv Machon and Gabby Adams each added a hit while Taylor went the distance in the circle for the Redhawks. 

Hopkins 19, Athol 1 (5) — Allison Robertson cracked a hit that drove in the Bears’ lone run in a Franklin County League East loss to the Golden Hawks in Athol on Monday. 

Jenna Bonenfant and Jaylynn Chapalonis each doubled for Athol. 

Baseball

Pioneer 9, Frontier 1 — Alex McClelland had a day at the plate for the Panthers, knocking two hits that drove in four runs to propel Pioneer to an independent win over the Redhawks in Northf ield on Monday. 

Hugh Cyhowski tallied two hits and an RBI, Ethan Quinn and Braeden Tsipenyuk both had a hit and an RBI, Ethan Maute cracked two hits while Peter Loud and Luc Belhumeur hit safely for the Panthers. Quinn got the win on the   mound, striking out 10 and holding Frontier to just four hits. 

Alex Gochinski had two of those hits, with Nico Fasulo and Grayson Loos both adding a hit for the Redhawks. Liam Skribiski-Banack struck out six in the loss. 

Wahconah 6, Greenfield 5 — The Green Wave got one run back in the top of the seventh but were unable to get the game-tying run across, falling in an independent contest in Dalton  on Monday. 

Wahconah scored five of its runs i n the fourth. 

Jackson Campbell and Michael Pierce each recorded two hits — Pierce  driving in two runs and Campbell adding an RBI — while Deven Dubie and Malik Moore both knocked a hit for Greenfield. Moore and John Marchefka each had an RBI. Pierce went the distance on the mound, striking out five. 

Hopkins 14, Athol 2 (5) — Noah Wein was the lone Bear to get a hit off Golden Hawk pitcher Liam Flynn, with Hopkins walking away with a five-inning Suburban League West win in Hadley on Monday. 

 Wein struck out two on the mound in the loss. 

Smith Academy 8, Franklin Tech 2 — The Falcons broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning, leading to a Bi-County League North win over the Eagles in Hatfield on Monday.
