Bulletin Board: Racquel Provost, Assumption field hockey ready for top-seeded East Stroudsburg in NCAA Div. 2 Field Hockey Final Four

The Assumption field hockey team is heading to the NCAA Div. II semifinals. 

Taking on Saint Anselm College in the opening round of the tournament on Saturday, the Greyhounds picked up a 2-1 victory following a late goal to keep their season alive. Racquel Provost, who attending Greenfield High School and Northfield Mount Hermon, helped Assumption earn a spot in the Final Four. 

The Greyhounds will face off against top-seeded and defending national champion East Stroudsburg University in the national semifinals on Friday at 2 p.m. in Manchester, N.H., with a spot in the championship game on the line. Shippensburg and Kutztown will meet in the other semifinal, and the national final is Sunday at 1 p.m.

Westfield State falls in first round

The Westfield State women's soccer team fell behind in its opening round game of the NCAA Div. 3 tournament and was unable to recover. 

Taking on Messiah, the Falcons scored twice in the first half and tacked three goals on in the second half to run away with a 5-1 victory over the Owls on Saturday.

Mahar alum Delaney Parker scored the lone goal for the Owls, tallying in the 84th minute. It was Parker’s 19th goal this season.

The International Volleyball Hall of Fame came out with its 11th Western Mass. Girls Volleyball All Star selections Tuesday, with seven local athletes being selected. 

Frontier — which has reached the MIAA Div. 4 semifinals while also winning the Western Mass. Class B championship — had four players selected. Setter Allie Pierce and outside hitters Caroline Deane and Gabby Adams were selected as First-Team All-Stars while middle hitter Kate DeMaio was selected as a Second-Team All-Star. 

Turners Falls — which reached the MIAA Div. 5 semifinals and won the Western Mass. Class D championship — had setter Taylor Greene and outside hitter Madi Liimtainen selected as First-Team All-Stars. Mohawk Trail middle hitter Maddie Cosentino, who helped the Warriors reach the MIAA Div. 5 tournament, was selected as a Second-Team All-Star. 

Fifty total players were selected for the All-Star game, which is scheduled for Nov. 21 at Holyoke Community College. The Second-Team All-Star game begins at 6 p.m. before the First-Team All-Star game gets underway at 7:30. 

Field hockey

Fifteen Western Mass. field hockey players were selected by the Massachusetts High School Field Hockey Coaches Association to compete in its annual Best-60 All-Star game, with three of those athletes coming from the Recorder area. 

Franklin Tech's Kait Trudeau, Frontier’s Hailey Hutkoski and Greenfield Ainslee Flynn are those three athletes. Trudeau, a forward who helped the Eagles reach the Div. 4 state tournament, will play for the Neon Orange team. Hutkoski, a defender who helped lead the Redhawks to a Western Mass. Class C championship and to the Div. 4 quarterfinals, and Flynn, the Green Wave goalie which saw Greenfield reach the Class C finals and the Div. 4 tournament, will play for the Navy squad. 

The games will take place at Nashoba Regional High School on Sunday, beginning at 10 a.m.

Greenfield Touch League

The semifinals of the Greenfield Touch Football League took place on Sunday, with top-seeded Gill CC Wood Working earning a 12-0 win over Amherst Office Park to move on to the finals. 

Jalen Sanders caught a pair of touchdowns from Pat Viencek while also picking off two passes in the win. Mac Rodgers had a pick for Amherst in the loss. 

Second-seeded Sirum will meet Gill CC Wood Working in the finals after knocking off the Blitzing Bears, 19-6. Malcolm Smith found Nuny Vega for a pair of touchdowns while Parker Hickey had two interceptions and returned one to the house for Gill. Dylan Donohue added an extra point in thew in.
