Bulletin board: Marcy Cabanas crosses first in heat-shortened Northfield Summer Road Race Series event

Marcy Cabanas was first across the line in the weekly Northfield Summer Road Race Series event on Thursday, posting a time of 13 minutes on the two-miles course that was shortened this week due to heat and humidity.

Marc Guillaume (13:19) came in second place, followed by Matt Bassett (14:57), Joe Snikeris (15:33), and Mary Buckley (18:51).

Racing

Motocross in Southwick

One year removed from celebrating a half-century of racing, the prestigious Pro Motocross Championship will usher in a new era for the 2023 season as the centerpiece of the newly formed SuperMotocross World Championship.

The championship will make its stop in Southwick on Saturday, as the Crestview Construction Southwick National will take place at The Wick 338.

The race at The Wick 338 will signify the halfway point of 11 events on the summer Pro Motocross calendar and the 23rd event of the SuperMotocross World Championship following the 17-race Supercross season.

Action begins on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. with practice and qualifying, while opening cermonies are set for 12:30 p.m. The First Motos (250 Class & 450 Class) take off at 1 p.m. and Second Motos (250 Class & 450 Class) followed at 2:30.

Saturday general admission tickets cost $60 for adults and $30 for kids ages 6-12.

Baseball

American Legion

Tyler Baranowski struck out seven in four innings of work, while Dylen Richardson finished things up over the final three innings to lift Greenfield Post 81 to a 7-3 win over Wilbraham No. 2 in an American Legion Senior Division contest on Wednesday.

Ethan Quinn singled twice and stole two bases for Post 81, while Jason Quinn drove in a pair of runs with a shot to deep center field. Baranowski added two singles in addition to his fine work on the mound.

“We’re starting to hit our stride and play the way we know we’re capable of,” Post 81 coach Julian Diamond said.

Sandy Koufax

Mohawk 6, Amherst 3 — Mohawk exploded for five runs in the third inning to break a stalemate against Amherst and held on for the win on Wednesday. 

Neither team could reach home plate in the first two and a half innings. Mohawk’s three runs in the bottom of the third were matched by Amherst’s three runs in the top of the fourth when Owen Eddy, Josh Angers, JJ Scanlon-Dean, Josh Willette and Max Lashway all singled to get the team going.

Willett started the game on the mound for Amherst before Scanlon-Dean came on in relief for three innings, striking out five and allowing one run. Aiden Shea started for Mohawk before Brody Hicks came on as the closer, throwing the final inning with one strikeout. 

Caleb Dillensneider had a single and double for Mohawk, also scoring once and finishing with an RBI. The win improved Mohawk’s record to 11-1. 

Softball

FC Summer League

Fury 5, Wolfpack 4 – Summer Routhier struck out eight in four innings of work to lift the Fury to a tight win in the Franklin County Summer Softball League on Wednesday at Murphy Park.

Routhier paced the offense with two hits while Abby Moffatt and Lyla Mickiewicz also had a hit apiece.

The Wolfpack received two hits apiece from Kailin Dubay and Cassie Dion.

Defenders 13, Magic 12 – Maggie Fay went the distance and struck out seven, and also clubbed a home run and a double to aid the Defenders in a one-run win on Wednesday.

Doubles by Gianna DiSciullo and Alanna Bonilla also paced the Defenders.

Madison Lemay doubled in the first inning for the Magic, while Olivia Lemay recorded seven strikeouts in the circle.

Menace 15, Defenders 0 – Skyler Steele doubled and tripled, and drove in a trio of runs to propel the Menace to a big victory.

Raine Wonsey struck out five in a three-inning no-hitter. Steph Barton smacked two hits and drove in three runs in the win.

Golf

WMass Pro Junior    

Kevin Piecuch and Gabe Mota teamed for a 64 to snag low gross honors in the 15-18 year old division at the Country Club of Greenfield’s WMass Pro Junior tourney on Wednesday.

Dave Wright and Henry Poissant were second with a 65, followed by the teams of Frankie and Mike Murray, as well as Taylor Schmidt and Lauren Connor (69).

In the 14 and under division, Dave Wright and Wyatt Fay shot 68 to tie for first with Keith Cunningham and Ryan McGregor. Cunningham and Ryley Regan were third with a 69.

Timmons-Messer League

In the red, white and blue dice tourney on Wednesday, low gross went to Curt White and Harry Hyams (36). Don Scott and Andy Sena were second after a match of cards (37).

Low net went to Jason Robinson and Ed Underwood (24), while Ed Gillespie and Matt Deane were second (26). Match medalist was Sena with a 37, while Norm LaCoy, Bob LaCoy, Andy Chartier and White all shot 38.

Closest to the pin on No. 6 was Matt Sykes (8-4), while Dan Grybko was closest at No. 7 (9-5).

Basketball

DRIVE Leagues

Jake Turner scored 16 points and Dom Furman went for 12 as The Cream notched a 68-66 overtime win over Rattigan & Son’s in DRIVE Men’s League action on Wednesday at Greenfield High School.

Malachi Roman went for 21 points and Kevin Mendez added 19 for Rattigan & Son’s.

• Elsewhere, Josh Hansen (20 points) and Jalen Sanders (14) powered The Future to a 72-67 win over Team No Name.

Chris Brown (23) led all scorers for Team No Name, and Rob Jones added 16.

• In other action, Team Markol received 28 points from Matt Petro and 13 from Dan Donoghue in a 65-63 win over OSC-MANNING.

Xavier Cruz led the way for OSC-MANNING with 24 points.

In Boys JV action at Stoneleigh Burnham on Wednesday, Grayson Thomas registered a game-high 24 points, and Lobsang Raeton followed with 20 in Greenfield’s 75-41 win over Easthampton. Zach Turner notched 12 points for Easthampton.

• In other action, Aydon  Wright’s 10 points sent Orange to a 34-28 win over Athol.

Kareem Thompson also scored 10 points for Athol.

• Elsewhere, Chris Colon (14 points) and Hinsdale took down Hampshire, 44-32, despite 16 points from Gerry Martin.

Adult softball

Montague Co-ed

Matt Gibson smacked a two-run walk-off home run to lift AGH Disposal and Recycling to a 23-21 win over Pioneer Valley Brewery on Thursday.

Gibson finished with four hits and six RBIs to pace AGH, which also received offensive outbursts from Joe Guidaboni (three hits, two doubles, two RBIs), Heather Willor (three hits), Josh Lashway (three hits, HR, 2B, two RBIs), Yohenny Pimentel (three hits, two doubles, two RBIs) and Che Christi (two hits, HR, five RBIs).

Pioneer Valley Brewery’s Brian Ginnity clubbed two home runs and Dave Marston also homered.
