ATHOL – Cooling centers in town will remain open through Wednesday, in response to the expectation of temperatures into the 90s.

The centers were opened on Monday, with the forecast calling for temperatures into the high 90s that day and Tuesday. The initial plan was to have them open through Tuesday, but the forecast now shows a high of 92 degrees on Wednesday.

An extreme heat warning is now in place by the National Weather Service, with heat index values up to 110 degrees expected in most of southern New England – excluding the Berkshires, Cape Cod and the islands – until 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Below is a list of the town’s cooling centers, which will be open during regular business hours. Phone charging is available at all sites. Cooling times may vary, so please call the center to confirm cooling hours.
