GREENFIELD — The Greenfield hockey team got its revenge on West Springfield Wednesday.
The first meeting between the Berry Division foes saw the Terriers run away with a 6-1 victory, but the Green Wave were ready the second time around.
It was an even game throughout, but Greenfield had the legs to take over in the final 15 minutes. Tied 1-1 going into the third period, the Wave potted a pair of goals to knock off West Side, 3-1, at Collins-Moylan Arena.
“It was definitely our attitude and how we adjusted,” Greenfield’s Loki Rhodes said about the difference between the two contests against the Terriers. “We came out slow last time but today we came out flying.”
Green Wave coach Adam Bouchard noted after the game that it was the first time Greenfield had beaten West Springfield during his long tenure as the Wave’s coach, and speculated that this might have been the first Greenfield team to ever defeat a Terrier program with a rich history of success.
Knowing this would be the last chance to avenge the tough road loss early in the season gave Green Wave players extra motivation going in.
“The seniors knew this would be our last time playing them,” Greenfield’s Matt Garvin said. “They wanted to play a lot harder. After getting your butt kicked [the first time] the whole team wanted to play harder. That’s what pushed us.”
Following a scoreless first period, West Springfield kicked off the scoring early in the second period.
