HS Roundup: Pioneer girls basketball earns third win in four games following 39-22 triumph over Franklin Tech (PHOTOS)

After a slow start to the season, a young Pioneer girls basketball team is finding its footing down the stretch.
The Panthers entered Thursday’s contest against Franklin Tech winners of two of their last three and added another tally to the win column, building a 17-9 halftime lead to eventually walk away with a 39-22 Franklin County League South triumph at Messer Gymnasium.
Kyler McClelland knocked down four 3’s to score 18 points while adding six rebounds and five steals in the win. Kiara Gruszkowski scored six points to go along with six rebounds, Jacobia Tyminski tallied six points, Natalie Rios scored five points and added six rebounds and five steals, Maggie Tsipenyuk pulled down six boards while Taylor Chase scored her first career varsity points in the win.
Laken Woodard led Tech with nine points, Cordelia Guerin finished with five points, Lilianna Inman scored four points while Haleigh Benoit added three points in the loss.
Lenox 47, Greenfield 13 — The Wave were limited to three points in the first half in a road loss to the Millionaires on Thursday in Franklin County League North action.
Gloria McDonald tallied seven points, Anna Bucala finished with four points while Natalia Cody added two points for Greenfield.
Athol 55, Hampden Charter 53 — Logan Cormier led the way with 20 points, helping the Bears earn an independent victory on the road on Thursday.
Athol led 27-22 at the half and 39-37 going into the fourth.

Ben Kearney tossed in 14 points, Ethan Goodwin scored 11 points and Aaron Ouellet added five points in the victory.
Frontier 77, Southwick 40 — Max Millette tossed in 20 points while Garrett Dredge finished with 17 points, lifting the Redhawks past the Rams in an independent contest at Goodnow Gymnasium on Thursday.
Frontier led 29-28 at the half before taking control in the third, outscoring Southwick 29-8 in the frame.
Rowan Modestow tallied with 13 points while Alex Ellis recorded 11 points in the winning effort.
The sixth PVIAC alpine ski race took place on Thursday at Berkshire East, with Mohawk Trail's Phineas Tuttman taking home a first place finish in the boys race after completing the giant slalom course in a time of 34 seconds.
Grayson Bishop placed third (34.23), Ben Zarotny took sixth (35.45), Liam Zarotny came in 11th (37.47), Zavel Gardner placed 21st (40.14), Gunnar Triggs took 23rd (40.39) while Xerxes Law placed 26th (40.85) for the Warriors.
Mohawk Trail’s Addie Loomis earned her sixth straight first place finish in the girls race, bombing down the slalom course in a time of 46.13 seconds.
Lydie Pinkham came in third (48.28), Sofiya Slocik-Gritzner took fourth (50.60), Brooke Koshinsky placed eighth (51.36), Grace Sisum tied for ninth (52.13) while Jaylynn Peters (25th, 1:04.16), Caroline Makosiej (26th, 1:04.29) and Ohia Dellert (28th, 1:04.50) also placed in the top 30 for the Warriors.
Wrestling
Athol 52, Frontier 24 — Adam Rodriguez (126), Brady O’Connell (144), Jayden Garcia-Davis (165), Anthony Lopez-Hippler (175) and Sawyer Lefsyk (215) picked up the victories for the Bears, who defeated the Redhawks at Goodnow Gymnasium Wednesday.
Thomas Bagdon (106), Jocelyn Antes (120), Zach Brown (132) and Konnor James (157) earned the wins for Frontier.
Mahar 53, Granby 18 — Nikolas Fregeau (126), Elias Roberts (138), Joshua Mazza (144), Cody Preisch (157) and Shawn Jensen (175) won their matches for the Senators, who defeated the Rams in Granby Wednesday.

Northfield Mount Hermon's Elianna Umana Kimura was the winner of the Mt. Institute Ski League race on Wednesday on the girls side with a combined run of 88.84 seconds. Hogger Wylie Benedetti came in third (91.68) while Ellie Pinkham took fourth (93.30). Deerfield Academy’s Rowan Skinner took second (91.36) wile Cecelia Cramer took fifth (96.35).
NMH’s Cody Vassar (first, 82.96), Sam Rotermund (second, 83.03), Ryan Choi (third, 83.75) and Ying Kay Leung (fifth, 85.71) led the way in the boys race.
