H.S. Roundup: Franklin Tech girls basketball steps up on defense to defeat Turners

The Franklin Tech girls basketball team brought its best on the defensive end of the floor on Friday in a Franklin County League South matchup against Turners. 

The Eagles came up with 19 steals as a team, led by Kyra Goodell with eight steals and Hannah Gilbert forcing four turnovers, to hold the Thunder to 13 points in the first half and 14 in the second half, with Franklin Tech coming away with a 41-27 win on the road. 

“It’s a really big win for our program,” Eagle coach Joe Gamache said. “The girls battled tonight. Defensively we played extremely well.” 

Hannah Gilbert led the charge on offense for Franklin Tech, scoring 15 points. Kendra Campbell added 10 points while doing a great job running the point, Lea Chapman recorded eight points and pulled down 15 rebounds, Goodell chipped in six points on offense and Kaitlin Trudeau had two points and helped lead the defensive charge for the Eagles. 

Taylor Greene went off for 15 points for Turners. Keira Richardson-Meatty and Steph Peterson each scored four points while Reagan Pendriss and Morgan Dobias both added two points in the loss. 

Mahar 37, Athol 20 — Hayden Comeau recorded a 15 point, 14 rebound double-double while Kendrah Doane chipped in nine points and 10 rebounds as the Senators earned an independent win over rival Athol on Friday in Orange. 

Alivia Patch scored five points, Nevaeh Scribner added four points while Sophia Woods scored two points and played a big role in holding down the Bear offense. 

Lizzy Mailloux led Athol with eight points. Ally Robertson chipped in four points while Emma Bacigalupo and Jenna Bonenfant each had three points in the loss.

Hopkins 50, Mahar 44 — The Sens nearly handed the Golden Hawks their first loss of the season, leading 22-18 at the half, but Hopkins held a 32-22 advantage in the second half of play to stay unbeaten and come away with a Hampshire League South win in Hadley Friday. 

Will Barnes had a team-high 16 points for Mahar. Connor Sluder tallied seven points,  Cathal Davis and Hunter Martin each chipp ed in  six  points  while Lucas Isrow scored five points in the defeat. 

Drury 50, Frontier 44 — Louis Guillotte showed why he’s one of the top scorers in the Hampshire League South, as the Blue Devil senior scored 31 points to lift Drury to a victory at Goodnow Gymansium Friday. 

“It was a well played game,” Redhawk coach Josh Morse said. “Guillotte was very good and our strategy to shut the others down and keep him somewhat in check almsot worked. Kudos to Drury. It was much tighter than our first game against them.” 

Nico Fasulo led Frontier with 13 points, with Owen Babb tacking on 12 points. Caiden Manning scored six points while Max Millette tallied five points in the loss. 

Athol 62, Lee 23 — The Bears raced out to a 37-13 lead at the half before cruising to a Hampshire League North win in Athol Friday. 

“Our defense played extremely well tonight and creating a lot of turnovers,” Athol coach Brian Patria said. “We had high energy during Youth Appreciation Night. Offensively we moved the ball well and looked to get the best shot available.”

Ben Kearney and Logan Cormier each recorded double-doubles for the Bears, Keaney scoring 14 points and snatching 1o boards while Cormier had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Conall Tontodonato posted eight points and 10 rebounds while Ethan Bacigalupo and Angel Castillo each tossed in six points in the win. 

Athol’s JV team beat Lee, 40-36. 

Greenfield 60, Lenox 47 — Jon Breor led the way with 16 points while Caleb Thomas and Caleb Murray joined him in double-figures with 10 points each as the Green Wave cruised to a Hampshire League South win in Lenox Friday. 

Greenfield led 33-19 at the half. 

Jackson Campbell and Jacob Blanchard each tossed in eight points in the victory. 

Mt. Greylock 77, Franklin Tech 47 — The Mounties exploded for 32 points in the first quarter and led 45-20 at the half en route to a Hampshire League North win over the visiting Eagles Friday. 

Ty Sadoski scored 21 points, Robert Belval tallied 14 points and Cayden Lehtomaki added three points for Franklin Tech. 

Deerfield scores

The Deerfield Academy boys hockey team beat Pomfret, 5-3, while the DA boys basketball team fell to Williston, 66-45, on Friday.

Turners 44, Pioneer 33 — Behind 17 points from Taylor Greene and 14 from Madi Liimatainen, the Thunder earned a Franklin County League South win over the visiting Panthers Thursday. 

Turners led 28-19 at the half. 

Lily Spera tossed in six points while Steph Peterson added four points in the victory. Kyler McCl elland led Pioneer with 15 points, with Addie Harrington adding six points and Sofia Walker tacking on five points in the defeat. 

Palmer 49, Mahar 44 — It was a back-and-forth affair in Palmer on Thursday, with the Senators trailing 37-33 going into the third quarter before Palmer held on to come away with a Franklin County League North win. 

Hayden Comeau led the way with 12 points for Mahar, with Kendrah Doane adding 11 points. Nevaeh Scribner scored 10 points while Sophia Woods chipped in six points in the loss.
