H.S. Roundup: Hailey Hutkoski’s buzzer beater lifts Frontier girls basketball past Lenox

Trailing 38-37 with four seconds left on Wednesday night, Frontier girls basketball coach Dave Machon called a timeout with the ball on the Lenox end of the court. 

Frontier sent the ball in to Hailey Hutkoski, who was cutting across the lane. Hutkoski took two dribbles and put in a reverse layup on the baselline as the buzzer sounded, lifting the Redhawks to a Franklin County League North win in Lenox. 

Kylie Laford had a team-high 12 points in the win, with Hutkoski tossing in 10 points. Delaney Fifield and Claire Kirkendall each added seven points for Frontier. 

McCann 39, Athol 19 — The Hornets defense came to play on Wednesday, holding the Bears to nine points in the first half and 10 in the second half as Athol fell in an independent contest at Mallet Gymnasium. 

Ally Robertson scored five points, Brooke Hopkins finished with four points, Emma Bacigalupo tallied three points while Olivia Horigan, Emily King and Jenna Bonenfant each had two points for the Bears.

Wrestling

FC Tech 42, Smith Voc 32 – Jackson Morey picked up the lone win for the Franklin Tech wrestling team against Smith Vocational on Wednesday, securing a first-period pin at 145 pounds, but due to forfeitures, the Eagles were able to walk away with a 42-32 victory in Turners Falls on Wednesday. 

Carsten Couture, Zaydrien Alamed, Dillon Gagnon, Madix Whitman and David Korpiewski also competed for the Eagles. 

Boys basketball

Hopkins 74, Turners 46 — The Golden Hawks raced out to a 40-22 lead at the half en route to an independent win over the Thunder in Hadley Wednesday.

Alex Quezada finished with 12 points, Levin Prondecki tallied 11 points, Logan Addison scored eight points and Joey Mosca knocked down a 3 in the loss.

Pioneer 67, Frontier 44 — Kurt Redeker went off for 20 points, Brayden Thayer tossed in 19 points and Josh Wood finished with 17 points as the Panthers earned a Hampshire League South win over the Redhawks at Goodnow Gymnasium Wednesday. 

Pioneer led 36-17 at the half. 

Hugh Cyhowski tallied four points and Alex McClelland knocked down a 3 in the victory. 

Nico Fasulo had the hot hand for Frontier, knocking down five 3’s to finish with 25 points. Max Millette chipped in 15 points whiel Kayden James made a 3 in the loss. 

Four Rivers 73, St. Michael’s 21 — Isaiah Goleman finished with 15 points while Ethan Sandberg tallied 14 points as the Otters picked up a River Valley Athletic League win on Wednesday.  

Nordic ski

The Mohawk Trail, Wahconah, Lenox, Amherst and Simbsury Nordic Ski teams went to  Williamstown to compete with Mt. Greylock in the fourth race of the season on Wednesday, with the Warrior boys taking fourth and the Mohawk Trail girls finishing in fifth. 

Vincent Gauthier (15th, 15:48), Augustus Niswonger (21st, 16:51), Oscar Schiff (25th, 17:21), Adam Muller (26th, 17:22) and Luke Pickard (30th, 18:15) were the top Warrior finishers on the boys side. 

Charlotte Niswonger (23rd,  22:21), Anya Read (28th, 22:54), Corinne Somes (29th, 23:08), Ada Comer (31st, 24:06), Sadie Mahon-Moore (33rd, 27:08) were the top Mohawk Trail girl finishers.

Mount Institute Ski

Northfield Mount Hermon’s Ellie Pinkham took first in the fourth Mount Institute Ski Race of the season on Wednesday at Berkshire East, finishing with a combined run of 88.54 seconds on the slalom course to help lead the Hoggers to a first place team finish. 

Vittoria Pinci placed third (90.27), Elianna Umana Kimura took sixth (94.04), Katalin Mazansky earned ninth (94.39) and Ludovica Frecchiami finished in 10th (95.77) for NMH. 

The Deerfield Academy girls took second, with top 10 finishes from Cecelia Cramer (fo urth, 93.44), Alex Hermsdorf (fifth, 93.87), Booie Blazak (tied for seventh, 94.17) and Ilsa Borgen (tied for seventh, 94.17). 

In the boys race, Johnny Monty (second, 81.57), Matt Keene (third, 89.95), Joe Brown (fourth, 91.72), Andrew Lewis (fifth, 92.57) and Walker Naughton (eighth, 94.10) earned spots in the top 10 for Deerfield Academy, who earned a first place team finish. 

Hogger Ryan Choi was the top overall finisher (80.75) while Robby Zuccotti (sixth, 93.24) and Erik Coscollola (10th, 94.3) joined him in the top 10 for NMH. 

DA results

The Deerfield Academy girls hockey team picked up a 3-0 win over Winchendon on Wednesday. 

Also on Wednesday, the Big Green boys hockey team beat Andover, 5-2, and in girls basketball, DA beat Kimball Union, 48-30. The Big Green wrestling team lost to Wilbraham, 42-27.
