High schools: Isaiah Goleman, Kolin Broderick help Four Rivers punch RVAL title-game ticket

The Four Rivers basketball team is championship-game bound.

The Otters punched their ticket to the River Valley Athletic League title game thanks to a 62-49 victory over the Dublin School in the semifinal round on Wednesday in Dublin, N.H.

Four Rivers will play on the road at Eagle Hill School in Hardwick for the RVAL championship on Thursday.

Isaiah Goleman led the way offensively for the Otters in Wednesday’s victory, pouring in 22 points, while Kolin Broderick also had a huge night with 20 points in the win. Sam Whitney added 11 points to give Four Rivers three players in double figures, while Cooper Whitney tossed in eight points as well.

Girls basketball

Greenfield 46, Mohawk Trail 13 – The Green Wave did the bulk of their offensive work in the first quarter, taking a 24-8 lead after one period en route to Wednesday’s victory at Nichols Gymnasium in Greenfield.

Amber Bergeron notched her third consecutive 20-plus point game, pacing Greenfield with 22 points – 12 coming in that big first quarter. Josie Cloutier and Carly Blanchard added eight points apiece for the Wave (7-11), which sat in the No. 33 spot in the most recent MIAA Division 5 Power Rankings. The top 32 teams earn state tournament berths.

Bella Pettengill’s 10 points were tops for the Warriors. Natalie Lanoue and Grace Davenport added two points each.

Pope Francis 61, Mahar 50 – On the road in Springfield, the Senators hung around high-powered Pope Francis but dropped a 61-50 decision on Wednesday.

The Cardinals, which improved to 16-2 on the season, led 29-20 at halftime and 45-37 after three.

Mahar’s Nevaeh Scribner scored a team-high 15 points, while Kendrah Doane went for 13 points and 10 rebound and Hayden Comeau also notched a double-double with 13 points and 17 boards.

The Senators (10-7) close out their regular season on Thursday with a home game against Lenox.

NEPSAC Ski

The 2023 NEPSAC Alpine Ski Class A championship race took place on Wednesday at Berkshire East, with Deerfield Academy placing third and Northfield Mount Hermon taking fourth in the boys race while NMH earned second and DA placed third in the girls race. 

Hogger Ryan Choi was the overall winner in the boys slalom and giant slalom race, finishing with a combined run of 77.63 seconds in slalom and 91.32 seconds on giant slalom. Big Green’s Johnny Monty finished right behind Choi in both races, placing second in the slalom (80.08) and giant slalom (92.04). 

NMH’s Ellie Pinkham earned a second place finish in the slalom race (84.86) and took sixth on the giant slalom course (99.35). Hogger Vittoria Pinci placed third in slalom (85.02) while NMH’s Elianna Umana Kimara earned fifth in the giant slalom (98.52). 

For DA, Cecelia Cramer finished in 10th in slalom (87.4) while Jing Wang took 10th in the giant slalom (101.68). 

Miscellany

GMLB registration

Registration for Greenfield Minor League Baseball is now open. 

All registration is done online (GMLB.org). The cost is $100 per player, $75 for a second sibling and $50 for each additional sibling. Registration closes on Feb. 28. 

Evaluations will be on Saturday, March 18 at Franklin County Technical School with times still to be determined. Team practices will begin on April 1. Any questions can be sent to gmlbcalripken@gmail.com. 

Berkshire Highland Pentathlon

The Berkshire Highlands Pentathlon is returning to Charlemont in April. 

The Pentathlon is scheduled to take place on April 1 at Berkshire East Mountain Resort. The race includes five events: a 4.5-mile trail run, an 18-mile bicycle road ride, a two-mile paddle, a two-mile adventure run and a two-mile adventure run and climb down the ski mountain. Participants can choose to complete the course as a team or solo.

Nearly 200 athletes participated last year, with 60 signed up for the 2023 event so far. There will be food and raffle prizes to winners in each category. There is a discounted entry fee for family teams and under-19 entrants. 

Online registration is available now at BikeReg.com. Race day registration will be available, with the race still looking for volunteers. This year’s benefactor is the Mary Lyon Foundation.
