High schools: Kendrah Doane’s late free throws help Mahar get past Belchertown

Locked in a tie game in the final minute of regulation, Kendrah Doane lifted the Mahar girls basketball team to what could be a key victory for state tournament seeding purposes on Wednesday afternoon.
Doane was fouled shooting a 3-pointer with 35 seconds remaining in regulation on the road at Belchertown. She calmly hit all three from the charity stripe, and the Senators survived a missed shot at the buzzer to capture a 45-42 victory over the Orioles in a non-playoff game.
Mahar closed out its regular season 11-9 overall, and now awaits its seed and matchup in the MIAA Division 4 tournament.
Doane finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds in a big effort for Mahar, while Hayden Comeau also notched a double-double with 11 points and 12 boards. Sophia Woods tossed in six points and Alivia Patch added four in the win.
St. Mary’s 47, Greenfield 45 – Despite 28 points from Amber Bergeron, the Green Wave couldn’t hold off the visiting Saints in a non-playoff game at Nichols Gymnasium on Wednesday afternoon.
Greenfield finished its season 7-13 overall.
Bergeron hit three 3-pointers for the Wave, which also received 10 points from Tayler Bergeron and five from Anna Bucala.
Paige Hutkoski’s 26 points powered the Saints.

Smith Voc 37, Mohawk Trail 32 — The Vikings pulled ahead 24-12 at the half but the Warrior defense stepped up in the third quarter. The club halted Smith Voc from scoring in the frame to cut the lead to 24-22 in the fourth.
Mohawk Trail was unable to complete the comeback, however, with the Vikings walking away with a victory in Northampton on Wednesday.
Bella Pettengill scored 10 points for Mohawk Trail, which closed out its season with the loss. Riley Giard added seven points, Rachel Pease tacked on six points and Natalie Lanoue and Kaylin Sumner each scored four points.
South Hadley 60, Frontier 43 — The Redhawks were unable to overcome a 38-23 halftime deficit, falling to the Tigers in South Hadley on Wednesday.
Hailey Hutkoski (11 points), Kylie Laford (nine), Olivia Machon (seven) and Claire Kirkendall (six) led the way scoring f0r Frontier (13-7), which now sets its sights on the MIAA Div. 4 state tournament.
Franklin Tech 61, Renaissance 51 — The Eagles outscored the Phoenix 30-13 in the second half to pull away with a victory in Turners on Wednesday and head into the state vocational tournament and MIAA Div. 5 state tournament with an 18-2 record.
“I give that program a ton of credit,” began Franklin Tech coach Joe Gamache of Renaissance. “They showed up with five girls tonight and they played extremely well.”
Lea Chapman and Hannah Gilbert led the charge for Tech, Chapman putting in 22 points and snatching 17 rebounds while Gilbert scored 22 points and dished seven assists. Kyra Goodell finished with nine points and seven rebounds, Lilianna Inman tallied six points and Kendra Campbell scored two points and added six rebounds in the victory.
Athol 41, PVCA 31 — Lizzy Mailloux scored 10 points while Jenna Bonenfant and Emma Bacigalupo both had seven points as the Bears defeated the Eagles at Mallet Gymnasium on Tuesday.
Belchertown 65, Mahar 57 – Jayden Delgado scored all 17 of his points in the second half as the Senators dropped their regular season finale on the road at Belchertown in a non-playoff game Wednesday.
Will Barnes added 12 points and Gavin Sullivan put three Senators in double figures with 10 points.
Mahar, which fell to 11-9 with the loss, now waits for its MIAA Division 4 state tournament seed.
Hampden Charter 51, Turners 49 – The Thunder led 40-32 entering the fourth quarter but couldn’t hold off charging Hampden Charter in their regular season finale on Wednesday in Chicopee.
Jake Lavin paced the Turners offense with 14 points, followed by Levin Prondecki with 10 and Alex Quezada with eight.
The Thunder closed their season 2-18 overall
Northfield Mount Hermon shined on the mountain at Berkshire East during the final Mt. Institute Ski League race of the season, with both the Hogger boys and girls taking first place.
Vittoria Pinci (second, 42.16 seconds), Ellie Pinkham (third, 42.44), Chiara Pinci (fourth, 42.87) and Elianna Umana Kimura (fifth, 43.06) led the charge for the NMH girls while Ryan Choi (second, 38.86), Zach Wells (fourth, 40.98) and Ken Takemoto (sixth, 42.21) had the top times for the Hogger boys.
Deerfield Academy took second in both the boys and girls races. Big Green Johnny Monty was the overall winner in the boys race (38.51) while Joe Brown (seventh, 42.63) and Walker Naughton (10th, 43.30) joined him in the top 10. Cecelia Cramer (sixth, 43.16), Booie Blazak (seventh, 43.94) and Ludovica Frecchiami (10th, 45.43) had the top runs for the DA girls.
NMH’s Pinkham and Choi finished the season as the top point scorers.
