H.S. Roundup: Deven Dubie tosses shutout to lead Greenfield baseball past Easthampton

Deven Dubie was in the zone on the mound for the Greenfield baseball team on Friday against Easthampton.
The junior went the distance for the Green Wave — his first full game pitching at the varsity level — striking out nine, walking four and giving up just four hits as Greenfield needed just one run in the sixth to walk away with a 1-0 Suburban League West victory at Vets Field.
“For his first full game he did an outstanding job for us,” Green Wave coach Tom Suchanek said. “He threw strikes and kept us in the game.”
With the game tied 0-0 going into the bottom of the sixth, Dubie decided to help himself out by getting on with a base hit. The Eagles tried to pick him off at first but the throw went out of play, allowing him to get on third. Jackson Campbell came to the plate and hit a slow roller that got by the pitcher and nobody could make a play on it, allowing Dubie to score and giving Greenfield the first and only run of the game.
Michael Pierce also had a hit for the Green Wave. It was Topher Reardon who kept the Greenfield lineup at bay, going six innings, allowing just the three hits and one walk while striking out eight.
Anthony Incampo knocked a single and a double while Zak Thibodeau and Jake Kostek hit safely in the loss.
Hopkins 10, Frontier 5 — It all fell apart for the Redhawks in the seventh inning.
Frontier held a 5-1 lead going into the final frame but due to errors and the the Golden Hawks’ bats coming alive, Hopkins put nine runs on the board to take a 10-5 lead. The Redhawks were unable to answer in the bottom of the seventh, with the Golden Hawks coming away with a Suburban League West victory in South Deerfield.

“I have to tip my cap to Hopkins,” Frontier coach Chris Williams said. “I always preach putting the ball in play and they gave us a first-hand experience of how that goes.”
Tyler Cusson knocked a double that brought in a pair of runs for Frontier. Alex Gochinski had a pair of hits and an RBI, Nico Fasulo knocked two hits while Eathon Bryant, Wyatt Edes and Aiden West hit safely in the loss. Liam Skribiski-Banack tossed six innings for the Redhawks, strikin gout eight.
Pat Fitzgibbons knocked a big double for the Golden Hawks in the seventh.
Hampshire 12, Athol 2 (5) — The Bears started hot, putting two runs on the board in the top of the first, but were unable to muster another run while the Raiders tallied one in the first, six in the second and five in the third to come away with a Suburban League West win in Westhampton on Friday.
Logan Cormier opened the game with a single, stole second and was driven in by Shea Brennan. Brennan then worked his way around the bases and made it home on an error to give the Bears a 2-0 lead.
Gabe Hume knocked a single in the fourth for the final hit of the day for Athol.
Frontier 18, Franklin Tech 6 (5) — It was a monster fourth inning for the Redhawks in a rematch with its opponent in the 2022 MIAA Div. 5 quarterfinals.
Hannah Gilbert blasted a solo home run to put the Eagles ahead, 6-5, going into the bottom of the fourth but the Frontier bats exploded for 11 runs in the bottom of the fourth before tacking two on in the fifth to come away with an independent win over visiting Tech on Friday.
Skyler Steele and Addy Wood both cracked home runs for the Redhawks, Steele also adding a single, a double and three RBIs while Wood also had a single and totaled two RBIs. Delaney Fifield had three hits including a double and brought in three runs, Liv Machon knocked four hits including a double and brought home four runs while Ashley Taylor had three hits and an RBI for Frontier.
Taylor got the win in the circle, striking out four.
Cordelia Guerin hit a two-run homer, Lily Ross knocked an RBI single, Kylee Gamache tallied a hit that brought in a pair of runs while Gianna DiSciullo and Keira Stevens both hit safely for the Eagles. Gilbert struck out six while Ross had three strikeouts in the circle in the loss.
Greenfield 15, Hopkins 3 — The Green Wave earned their second win of the season on Friday, with Ainslee Flynn blasting a pair of triples that brought in six runs to help propel Greenfield to an independent victory in six innings at Vets Field.
Rachel Dodge knocked a single, a double and brought in two runs, Ellis Benitez had a pair of hits and an RBI while MacKenzie Paulin had two hits that brought in a pair of runs in the win.
Paulin tossed all six innings for the Green Wave, striking out 12, giving up just four hits and one earned run.
Greenfield 82, Franklin Tech 59 — Jackson Caron was a busy man for the Green Wave on Friday, winning the pole vault (seven feet, six inches), the 800 (two minutes, 24.5 seconds), the mile (5:13.6) and the 2 mile (11:53.5) while Mason Youmell won the 110 hurdles (20 seconds) and the 400 hurdles (1:14.2) as Greenfield picked up a win over the visiting Eagles.
Krish Patel took the high jump (5-8), Deion Brewington won the shot put (40-2), Ryan Pulizari came in first in the javelin (117-1) and Jerry Ven came out victorious in the discus (94-10) for the Green Wave. Greenfield won the 4x400 relay (4:43.5).
Cam Candelaria won a pair of events for Franklin Tech, taking first in the 100 (11.9) and 200 (25.3). Other Eagle winners were Josiah Little in the long jump (18-5.5), Brayden McCord in the triple jump (36-2) and Maddix Whitman in the 400 (1:05.3).
Greenfield 85, Turners 34 — Suhani Patel and Ava Fortin each won a trio of events for the Green Wave, Patel earning first in the high jump (4-6), 110 hurdles (23.4) and the 400 hurdles (93.6) while Fortin won the mile (6:32), 800 (2:55.7) and the 2 mile (14:00) as Greenfield walked away with a win over the Thunder in Greenfield Friday.
Other Greenfield winners were Ava Widelo in the long jump (12-4), Aneesa Brewer in the shot put (25-9), Makayla Valente with a PR in the javelin (90-3), Lillia Kachelmeyer in the discus (80-1) and Alice Fortin in the 400. The Green Wave also won the 4x100 relay (60.8).
For Turners, Ella Guidaboni won the triple jump (24-0), Jaade Duncan took the 100 (14.1) and Jazzlyn Gonzalez earned first in the 200 (31.8). The Thunder won the 4x400 relay.
Frontier 3, Greenfield 2 — The top of the Redhawks’ lineup delivered in a road victory. Frontier No. 1 singles player Sydney Scanlon beat Kaitlyn Collins 6-0, 6-4, and No. 2 singles Sam Baker swept Mireb Gheorghita 6-0, 6-0.
The Redhawks’ top doubles team of Chloe Felton-Merick and Thanushi Ratnatunge beat Isabella Semonelli and Lydia Wood 6-1, 6-3.
Greenfield’s Rebecca Covalenco defeated Hashini Ratnatunge in No. 3 singles while Lily Duong and Jessica Mihailicenco beat Amelia Dickson and Aylen Shaw 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 doubles for the Green Wave.
PVCICS 5, Turners Falls 0 — Alissa Shinn rallied from a 5-7 first set loss at No. 1 singles, surviving a 7-6 (7-2) second set against the Thunder’s Steph Peterson before prevailing 13-11 in the tiebreaker for the Dragons.
PVCICS’ doubles teams both came back from a set down, as well. No. 1 Eloise Tuleja and Nina Zorzi downed Holly Hicks and Avery Heathwaite 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. No. 2 Avery Richards and Biya Chaudhry rallied against Maddy Lilly and Emma Haarman, 4-6, 6-4, 13-11.
Dragons’ No. 2 singles player Christina Heiney won 6-2, 6-1 over Jill Reynolds, while Rahcel Goa took a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Olivia Wolbach at No. 3.
Frontier 5, Turners Falls 0 — Coleman Hartner survived a three-set thriller agians the Thunder’s Mike Boyle to secure the Redhawks’ sweep. He won the first set 6-4 before losing the second 4-6. Hartner then captured an 11-9 tiebreak in the third set.
Frontier (2-0) swept both doubles matches and No. 3 singles. Robert Fuque defeated Patrick Andrews 6-0, 6-0 in the singles. The Redhawks’ No. 1 doubles team of Oliver Brown and Harry Wright won 6-0, 6-0 against John Carmichael and Jake Reich, and Frontier’s No. 2 pairing of Donovan Vichi and River Rodrigues won against Max Briere and Ed Walsh 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 2 singles, Frontier’s Miles Keefe bested Noah Kolodiezj 6-1, 6-0.
Putnam 3, Athol 0 — Dmitry Guimaraes put down 15 kills as the Beavers earned a 25-19, 25-19, 25-23 win over the visiting Bears on Friday.
