H.S. Roundup: Greenfield baseball cherishes trip to Cooperstown

The Greenfield baseball team might have left Cooperstown without a win, it was a great and enjoyable trip for both players and coaches.
The Green Wave took on South Hadley Sunday night at Doubleday Field, but Greenfield dug itself in a 5-0 hole in the first inning following a trio of errors and were unable to recover, with the Tigers walking away with a 10-5 victory.
“It was a good experience,” Green Wave coach Tom Suchanek said. “We have a good relationship with South Hadley. The kids had a good time over there.”
While Greenfield dug itself in a hole, it never quit. South Hadley tacked two on the board in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead but the Green Wave got two back in the top of the fifth before scoring three in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 7-5. The Tigers answered back with three in the bottom of the sixth to take command.
“Our guys never gave up,” Suchanek said. “They kept competing.”
Deven Dubie led the way at the plate with two hits, one a double, and brought in two runs. Jackson Campbell, John Marchefka, Michael Pierce and Caleb Thomas all had two hits while Malik Moore, Luca Siano and Arthur Fitzpatrick each hit safely in the loss.
Caleb Thomas pitched well for Greenfield in the defeat.
Turners 6, Franklin Tech 0 — Alex Quezada tossed a gem for the Thunder on Monday, allowing just two hits while striking out eight to lead Turners to a Bi-County League North win over the visiting Eagles on Monday.

Quezada helped himself with two hits at the plate. Jackson Cogswell, Joey Mosca and Dylan Shinall each had a pair of hits and RBIs, one of Cogswell’s hits a double, Kainen Stevens knocked two hits while Cam Burnett hit safely for the Thunder.
Ty Sadoski and Ben Dodge each hit safely for Franklin Tech.
Frontier 13, Athol 3 (5) — Liam Skribiski-Banack continues to smash the ball at the plate for the Redhawks, knocking three hits that drove in four runs as Frontier earned a five-inning Suburban League West win over the Bears in South Deerfield on Monday.
Nico Fasulo had two hits, one a double, and brought in a run for Frontier. Alex Gochinski singled and doubled, Aiden West tallied two hits and an RBI, Tyler Cusson doubled, Eathon Bryant and Kaiden James each had a hit and an RBI while Miles Ferreira hit safely in the win. Aiden Heffernan and Wyatt Edes each struck out three for the Redhawks.
James Williams recorded a pair of hits and RBIs while Shea Brennan, Mark Gauthier, Riley Young, Noah Wein and Marc Gould each had a hit for Athol.
Franklin Tech 9, Turners 3 — Hannah Gilbert limited the Thunder to just six hits while striking out 11 while Kylee Gamache led the way at the plate with two hits and three RBIs as the Eagles earned an independent win over host Turners on Monday.
"We got a great pitching performance out of Hannah," Franklin Tech coach Joe Gamache said. "We played some pretty solid defense, made some plays when we needed to and got timely hits. Those are the three keys we preach that we need to do to be successful and girls executed in all three phases."
Kyra Goodell knocked an RBI single while Hannah Gilbert also hit safely for the Eagles. Kendra Campbell had a big throw in the bottom of the first by throwing a runner out from center field who was trying to take third on a base hit.
Madi Liimatainen struck out 15 for Turners. Holly Myers had a pair of hits and an RBI while Morgan Dobias, Janelle Massey, Addison Talbot and Mia Marigliano each had a hit for the Thunder.
Greenfield 4, Agawam 0 — MacKenzie Paulin went the distance for the Green Wave, striking out eight, walking two and holding the Brownies to just two hits in Greenfield’s independent win on Monday at Vets Field.
Ellis Benitez recorded two hits, Brielle Widelo cracked a hit that brought in two runs, Rachel Dodge and Ainslee Flynn each had a hit and an RBI while Paulin doubled for the Green Wave.
Mohawk Trail 24, Mahar 1 — Addie Loomis cracked a single and a triple while Riley Giard homered, added three singles and struck out five in the circle in the Warriors’ Franklin County League East win over the Senators in Buckland on Monday.
Maddie Consentino recorded two hits while Sophia Goodnow, Abby Moffatt and Hannah Unaitis hit safely for Mohawk Trail.
Hayden Comeau had a double and a single for Mahar.
Easthampton 9, Frontier 8 — The Redhawks rallied to score five in the top of the sixth to knot the game 8-8, but the Eagles responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Frontier was unable to tie it up in the top of the seventh, with Easthampton squeaking out an independent win on Monday.
Delaney Fifield had two hits, one a triple, and drove in two runs, Sophia Pinardi knocked a pair of hits, Skyler Steele tallied a hit and two RBIs, Ashley Taylor recorded a hit and an RBI while Gabby Adams hit safely for the Redhawks.
Smith Academy 23, Athol 16 — Jenna Bonenfant cracked two doubles and a single while Giana Vaillancourt tallied three hits in the Bears’ Franklin County League East loss to the Falcons in Athol on Monday.
Alyssa Logan, Allison Robertson, Jaylynn Chapalonis and Hailey Cummings each knocked two hits while Kahlen Gregory and Tapanga Chapalonis each hit safely in the defeat.
Frontier 3, Turners 2 — The Thunder won the top two singles matches but the Redhawks took No. 3 singles and earned victories in both doubles matches to earn a win over Turners in South Deerfield on Monday.
Noah Nichols picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win over Patrick Andrews in No. 3 singles for Frontier. Liam Wells and Xavier Fripp knocked off John Carmichael and Vaughn LaValley (6-1, 6-0) in No. 1 doubles while Jarrod Isles and Ben Desmond earned a 6-0, 6-0 win in No. 2 doubles over Max Briere and Edward Walsh to seal the Redhawk win.
Turners’ Mike Boyle walked away with a 6-3, 6-2 victory in No. 1 singles over Caiden Manning while Noah Kolodziej came out with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Brayden Reipold in No. 2 singles for the Thunder.
PVCICS 3, Greenfield 2 — The Dragons swept the singles matches to earn a win over the Green Wave on Monday at the Davis Street Courts.
Lydia Wood and Isabella Semonelli earned a 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, 10-4 win in No. 1 doubles while Lily Duong and Amy Mihailicenco walked away with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 triumph in No. 2 doubles for Greenfield.
Mahar hosted Athol and Pioneer for a meet on Monday, with the Sens picking up an 89-26 victory over the Bears while falling to the Panthers, 114-26.
Pioneer's Caroline Ring won the shot put (27 feet, nine inches) and the discus (94-10), Laila Heilman took the long jump (14-0.5), Hailey Ring came first in the triple jump (33-3), Louis Flagollet won the high jump (4-8), Nina St. Claire took the 100 (13.1 seconds) and the 200 (27.5), Sahana Heilman won the mile (6:27) and the 800 (2:58.9), Kelseigh Sargent in the 400 hurdles (82.0) and Lauryn Kalinowski in the 2 mile (15:24.8).
Stellina Moore won the pole vault (9-6) while Nevaeh Scribner took the 400 (68.8) for Mahar. Sydney Gauvin had strong performances in the discus (67-3) and javelni (67-10) for Athol.
In the boys race Mahar earned wins over Pioneer (118-22) and Athol (121-18) behind first place finishes from Dom Whitman in the long jump (18-7.75), the 100 (11.1) and from Mitchell Krasco in the 110 hurdles (17.7), the triple jump ( 38-0.5) and the 400 hurdles (67.2).
Rounding out the Senators winners were Marshall Ames in the high jump (5-8) and 400 (56.3), Coltin Fausett in the pole vault (8-6), Liam DiDonato in the 800 (2:39.9), Mathieu Soucy in the 200 (24.1) and Peter Frost in the 2 mile (12:22).
Joe Grant won the shot put (34-10.25) and Nicholas Leblanc took the discus (107-10) for Athol while Levi Moran came in first in the mile (5:35.9) and Cooper Bullock won the javelin (113-8) for the Panthers.
West Springfield 3, Frontier 1 — The Redhawks dropped their second match of the season on Monday, falling to the Terriers 25-18, 25-21, 20-25, 25-22 on Monday in West Springfield.
Jesse Kurkulonis and Jack Carey each put down 10 kills, Owen Babb smashed seven kills, Aleks Carey tallied six kills, Brady Burch had five kills while Tavo Vincent-Warner distributed 29 assists in the loss.
