High School Sports Roundup: Athol girls soccer blanks Franklin Tech

TURNERS FALLS — In a battle of two of the top teams in the Bi-County League on Monday night, visiting Athol built an early lead to set the tone and took care of business to stay unbeaten.
The Bears led 2-0 at halftime and tacked on a late goal en route to a 3-0 league win under the lights at Franklin Tech.
Olivia Horrigan and Hannah Cardoso netted first-half goals for Athol, while Cardoso added a second with five minutes remaining in regulation.
The Eagles had some chances in the first half, including a few loose balls bouncing in the six-yard box, but Athol goalie Ava Adams (10 saves) was able to keep the home team off the board.
Franklin Tech goalie Shaylee Martin stopped a penalty kick in the first half, and finished the night with six saves. Brayleigh Burgh came on and also recorded a save for Tech.
Next up, the Bears (2-0) will host Gateway on Wednesday night while Franklin Tech (0-2-1) hosts Renaissance, also on Wednesday.
Greenfield 6, Renaissance 1 — Tayler Bergeron buried a hat trick, and the Green Wave continued their dominant start to the season with a 6-1 Bi-County League victory over Rensaissance on Monday.
Bergeron scored once in the first half and added two more in the second, while also dishing off an assist. Elderina Cecunjanin netted her first of two goals just four minutes into regulation to stake Greenfield (2-0) to an early lead. Natalia Cody also scored in the win.

Franklin Tech 3, PV Christian 2 — The Eagles won a marathon five-setter on Monday, holding on for a 25-21, 15-25, 25-17, 18-25, 15-13 independent victory.
Sarah Beckwith went for five aces, eight digs and a kill for Franklin Tech, while Jenna Petrowicz had two kills, two aces, five blocks and 10 digs. Other key contributors were Taylor Underwood (six digs) and Madison Pettingill (four aces, six kills, five digs, five blocks).
PV Christian 3, Athol 1 — The Bears slipped to 0-3 on the season with a loss on Monday at O’Brien Field.
Cooper Smith tallied the lone goal for Athol, while goalie Drake Wing made nine saves in net.
Athol turns right around and travels to Smith Voc on Tuesday
Smith Academy 3, Mohawk Trail 0 — Shae Moulton scored a pair of second-quarter goals paced the Falcons, which looked sharp in a shutout win over the Warriors in Buckland.
Redyn Gutierrez stopped 17 shots in net for Mohawk Trail.
East Longmeadow 7, Turners 0 — The high-powered Spartans had seven different players find the back of the net in a Valley League victory on Monday night in Turners Falls.
Goalie Connor Glennon made 11 saves in net for the Thunder (0-3-1).
Westfield 7, Mahar 0 — Audrey Leonard tallied three goals for the unbeaten Bombers, which notched a 7-0 Valley League win on the road in Orange on Monday.
Bella Burnett turned aside 16 shots in a busy outing between the pipes for the Senators (0-3).
East Longmeadow 155, Frontier 163 — The Redhawks showed well against a powerhouse Spartans squad, coming up just eight strokes short in an independent match played Monday at Veterans Golf Course in Springfield.
Brady Wood shot 38 for Frontier’s low round of the day, while teammates Cam Skiffington (39), Ryan Cetto (43) and Porter Hall (43) also figured into the scoring. East Longmeadow had seven players shoot 42 or better, led by medalist Cam Erickson’s 35.
Volleyball
Melrose 3, Frontier 0 — Continuing their challenging slate of non-league matches to open the season, the Redhawks hung tough against Div. 2 Melrose, but ultimately fell 25-23, 25-17, 25-11 in South Deerfield on Saturday.
Abigail Hernandez led the way with eight kills and two aces, Bailey Martin added five kills and two aces while Parrish Stilla distributed 14 assists for Frontier.
Boys soccer
Turners 4, Athol 2 — Yolvin Ovalle-Mejia and David Klempner-Siano each found the back of the net twice while Noah Kolodziej, John Ramirez and Moises Borrayes tallied assists as the Thunder defeated the Bears on Friday.
Cooper Smith and Truce Flynn scored for Athol.
Greenfield 3, Pioneer 0 — Jacobia Tyminski (four aces, seven digs), Kiara Gruszkowski (three digs, two kills, one block) and Molly Gouin (three digs, one ace, one block) played well for the Panthers in a loss to the Green Wave Friday.
