H.S. Roundup: Greenfield girls tennis wins tight match against Mohawk Trail (PHOTOS)

It all came down to No. 3 singles during a girls tennis match between Greenfield and Mohawk Trail on Monday.
The Warriors took Nos. 1 and 2 singles while the Green Wave swept the two doubles matches, leaving it up to the No. 3 singles contest between Greenfield’s Rebecca Covalenco and Mohawk Trail’s Hazel Foucault. It was a tightly contested match, with Covalenco winning the opening set via tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-4). Covalenco then won the second set, 6-4, to earn the victory and lift the Green Wave to a 3-2 triumph at the Davis Street Courts.
In No. 1 doubles Greenfield’s Lydia Wood and Izzy Semonelli earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over Elias Crowell and Lauryn Lovett while Lily Duong and Jessica Mihailicenco beat Dakota Cusimano and Rowan Richardson in No. 2 doubles.
Warrior Palmer King walked away with a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Kaitlyn Collins in No. 1 singles while Paige King defeated Greenfield’s Mireb Gheorghita, 6-1, 6-1, in No. 2 singles for Mohawk Trail.
Frontier 3, PVCICS 2 — It was a clean sweep in singles for the Redhawks that allowed them to squeak out a 3-2 victory against the Dragons in South Deerfield Monday.
Sydney Scanlon came out with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph in No. 1 singles, Maddy Powers won 6-2, 6-0 in No. 2 singles while Sam Baker pulled away with a 6-0, 6-2 victory in No. 3 singles for Frontier.
Turners 5, Chicopee 0 — Steph Peterson’s 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles helped propel the Thunder to a sweep over the Pacers in Chicopee on Monday.
Frontier 4, West Springfield 1 — Miles Keefe picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win in No. 2 singles while Robert Fuqua earned a 6-0, 6-1 triumph in No. 3 singles as the Redhawks improved to 3-0 on the year with a 4-1 victory over the Terriers on Monday in West Springfield.

Greenfield 12, Athol 2 (5) — The Green Wave scored three runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings, with Caleb Thomas picking up the win on the mound as Greenfield pulled away with a Suburban League West win in Athol Monday.
Michael Pierce cracked a home run and a single, bringing in two runs for Greenfield. Jackson Campbell and Malik Moore both had a hit and an RBI, Deven Dubie knocked a pair of hits, John Marchefka doubles while Thomas, Luca Siano and Arthur Fitzpatrick each had an RBI for the Green Wave.
Logan Cormier blasted a double while Riley Young and Gabe Hume hit safely for Athol in the loss.
Frontier 6, Easthampton 5 — After being on the wrong end of a late rally on Friday, the Redhawks made a late comeback to pick up a Suburban League West victory on Monday against the Eagles.
Trailing 4-2 going into the sixth, Frontier put two runs on the board to knot the game up. Easthampton regained the lead in the bottom of the frame but the Redhawks scored twice in the seventh and Max Skribiski-Banack came on to earn the save to lead Frontier to a 6-5 comeback victory in Easthampton.
Aidan Heffernan got the win on the mound for the Redhawks, striking out three in four innings work. Grayson Loos finished with a hit and two RBIs, Wyatt Edes had two hits, one a double, and an RBI, Alex Gochinski finished with a pair of hits and an RBI, Tyler Cusson knocked an RBI single, Nico Fasulo had a triple and a single, Jesse Dubreuil hit safely while Liam Skribiski-Banack had an RBI in the victory.
Pioneer 22, Sci-Tech 8 (5) — The Panthers pulled ahead 15-0 after three innings in an independent win over the Cybercats on Monday in Springfield.
Ian Simpson got the win on the mound while Ben Werner and Peter Loud also pitched for Pioneer.
Ethan Mauthe belted an inside-the-park grand slam, Ethan Quinn hit an RBI double, Hugh Cyhowski had a pair of hits and RBIs, Braeden Tsipenyuk knocked a two RBI base hit while Alex McClelland finished with two hits and two RBIs for the Panthers.
Smith Academy 2, Franklin Tech 0 — The Eagles loaded the bases twice but were unable to get a run in on Falcons ace Griffin Smiarowski, with Smith Academy earning a Bi-County North in Turners on Monday.
Kyle Begos pitched well for Franklin Tech in the loss, striking out six and giving up just two walks. Alex Sulda knocked a pair of doubles while Ty Sadoski, Sam Knight and Nate Fuess each had a base hit in the loss.
Garrett Willard and Smiarowski each doubled for Smith Academy.
Greenfield 27, Smith Academy 1 (5) — Amber Bergeron had herself a day at the plate for the Green Wave on Monday, hitting for the cycle and driving in six runs as Greenfield cruised to an independent victory in Hatfield on Monday.
MacKenzie Paulin went all five innings in the circle for the Green Wave, striking out 14 and giving up just one hit and one walk in the win.
Frontier 28, Athol 11 — The runs came early and often for the Redhawks on Monday against the Bears.
Frontier scored eight runs in the first inning, tacked eight more on in the second before exploding for 12 runs in the fourth to pick up an independent win over Athol in five innings in South Deerfield.
Hailey Hutkoski tallied three hits, one a triple, and three RBIs for the Redhawks. Skyler Steele also had three hits, one a triple, and brought in two runs, Sophia Pinardi cracked a double, three singles and drove in three runs while Addy Ehle hit a double that brought in three runs in the victory. Liv Machon got the win in the circle, striking out six while Addy Wood struck out one and Ashley Taylor added two strikeouts for Frontier.
Alyssa Logan finished with three hits and an RBI, Jenna Bonenfant had a pair of hits and RBIs, Jaylynn Chapalonis knocked a hit that drove in two runs while Giana Vaillancourt had a hit and an RBI for Athol.
Wahconah 26, Mahar 2 (5) — Hayden Comeau had a hit and an RBI while Alivia Patch and Dakota Cleveland each had a base hit as the Sens fell to the Warriors in an independent contest Dalton on Monday.
Mahar scored both of its runs in the fifth.
Taconic 16, Mohawk Trail 4 — The Thunder bats knocked 14 hits to defeat the Warriors in an independent game in Pittsfield on Monday.
Addie Loomis drilled a triple, Adrian Grant and Riley Giard each knocked a double while Aileen Moffatt singled for Mohawk Trail. Giard struck out three in the loss.
Hopkins 17, Turners 3 (5) — The Thunder couldn’t get the bats going against the Golden Hawks, with Hopkins ace Kaelyn Zakaitis holding Turners to just four hits as the Thunder fell in an independent tilt on Monday in Turners.
Madi Liimatainen, Holly Myers, Morgan Dobias and Hannah Gordon hit safely for Turners. Liimatainen added four strikeouts in the circle in the loss.
Williston 15, Four Rivers 14 — Williston stormed back from an 11-3 deficit to come away with a win over the Otters on Monday. Caleb Bird scored five goals and had an assist in the loss.
