High schools: Franklin Tech field hockey battles, falls in OT to Blackstone Valley in state vocational final

The Franklin Tech field hockey team gave Blackstone Valley Tech all it could handle in the title game of the MVADA Small School finals on the road in Upton Tuesday.
It was a defensive battle throughout, as neither the Eagle or Beaver defense surrendered a goal through 60 minutes, leading to overtime.
Blackstone finally broke through in the OT period, smashing in a goal to take home the title with a 1-0 victory.
“I’m very proud of my team,” Franklin Tech coach Rian Lovett said. “To take an hour and a half bus ride, play a team of that caliber and hold it to 0-0 through regulation is unbelievable. We played together as a team and did all the things we’ve been working on and talking about all season. The girls stepped up when we needed them to in different phases today.”
Madison Markwell made seven saves for the Eagles, with Blackstone unable to score on 12 corners.
“It came down to a great shot from them,” Lovett said. “They’re a really good team. There was nothing we could do to defend the shot. There’s no regrets on our end. We played well, competed and didn’t give up. There’s a lot to move forward with going into states.”
Franklin Tech now waits for MIAA Div. 4 brackets to be released on Wednesday.
