High schools: Kaitlyn Collins, Greenfield girls tennis team sweep Springfield International

GREENFIELD — Jessica Mihailicenco shook off a slow start to her match at No. 3 singles, rallying after dropping the first set to capture a third-set super tiebreaker and help the Greenfield girls tennis team to a clean 5-0 sweep of Springfield International Charter School on Monday at the Davis Street Courts.

Mihailicenco dropped the opening set to SICS’ Kymora Mckenzie, 7-5, but rallied to win the second frame 6-0 and ultimately notched a 10-6 win in the third-set super tiebreaker.

Kaitlyn Collins set the table for the Green Wave at No. 1 singles, notching a 6-1, 6-0 victory, and Mireb Gheorghita followed with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at second singles.

At first doubles, Greenfield’s Isabella Semonelli and Lydia Wood cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win, and the second doubles tandem of Lily Duong and Virginia Rahubenco closed it out with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep.

Baseball

Mahar 2, Turners Falls 1 — A pitcher’s duel in Orange lasted until the bottom of the ninth inning, when Nate Danielson’s infield single plated Morgan Softic for the game-winning run to lift host Mahar to a 2-1 walk-off victory on Monday.

Danielson also set the tone on the mound for Sens. He tossed all nine innings, striking out five and walking just two.

Turners’ Dylan Shinall pitched an outstanding game for the visitors, striking out four in eight-plus innings.

Turners led 1-0 when Cam Burnett touched home with a run in the top of the second inning. It stayed that way until the sixth, when Softic tied the game with a run that ultimately held until extra innings.

Sam Connors and Lucas Isrow had two hits apiece for Mahar, while Alex Quezada was 3-for-4 to pace the Thunder offense.

Pioneer 17, Franklin Tech 1 (5) — Ethan Quinn struck out seven in four innings to pick up the win, and Hugh Cyhowski registered five hits and five RBIs at the plate to help the visiting Panthers roll to 17-1 victory on Monday in Turners Falls.

Pioneer (7-0) pounded out 18 hits as a team. Alex McClelland (two hits, two RBIs), Ethan Mauthe (two hits, two RBIs), Ian Simpson (two hits, two RBIs), Braeden Tsipenyuk (two hits, RBI), Ben Werner (hit, RBI) and Peter Loud (hit, RBI) all had big outings at the plate. Simpson  struck out two in an inning of relief to seal the victory.

Ty Sadoski was 3-for-3 and scored the lone run for the Eagles.

Hopkins 7, Athol 2 — Logan Cormier and Shea Brennan each scored runs for the Bears, which fell to 0-9 on the season with a 7-2 loss to the Golden Hawks on Monday in Athol.

Hopkins scored three runs in the top of the first to take control, though Cormier was hit by a pitch and scored on a wild pitch in the home half to make it a 3-1 game.

It was 6-1 in the bottom of the third when Brennan singled and eventually scored for Athol’s second run of the afternoon.  

Smith Academy 4, Mohawk Trail 3 — The visiting Warriors scored three times in the top of the second inning to take a 3-0 lead, but Smith Academy rallied with two in the fifth, one in the sixth and plated the walk-off run in the home half of the seventh en route to a tight 4-3 victory on Monday in Hatfield.

Griffin Smiarowski doubled in Logan Graves for the winning Smith Academy run.

Weekend results

Baseball

Frontier 3, Southwick 1 — Grayson Loos struck out six in four innings of work, picking up the victory as the Redhawks edged Southwick, 3-1, on Saturday in South Deerfield.

Frontier jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning and added some insurance with a run in the sixth. Loos also had the team’s only two hits at the plate, scoring twice, while Alex Gochinski plated the other run for the hosts. Eathaon Bryant recorded an RBI, and Liam Skribiski-Banack locked down Southwick for the final three innings with three punchouts to pick up the save.
