While the brisk, chilly weather this week doesn’t make it seem like the spring sports season is here, local high school baseball, softball, tennis and volleyball teams will get their campaigns underway Thursday and Friday.

With it being a light winter in terms of snow — and, prior to Wednesday, not much rain in the area — the spring season should kick off on time, though New England weather always has something to say about that. 

On Thursday, five of the six Recorder area tennis teams are in action, with the Frontier boys hosting Palmer, the Turners Falls boys hosting Pope Francis, the Greenfield girls taking on PV Christian at the Davis Street Courts, the Mohawk Trail girls hosting Renaissance and the Turners girls hosting St. Mary’s.

Also on Thursday, the Frontier boys volleyball team — which has won two straight Western Mass. titles — kicks off its season against Chicopee Comp at Goodnow Gymnasium. The Athol boys volleyball team will open its season Friday on the road against Chicopee. 

The baseball and softball seasons in Franklin County begin Friday. The Pioneer baseball team — which has made it to the MIAA Div. 5 semifinals each of the past two seasons — will travel to Oxford to take on the Pirates in what should be a highly-competitive non-conference battle. Oxford was the No. 3 seed in the Div. 5 field last spring.

Also on Friday, the Mahar baseball team gets its season underway against Western Mass. Class C finalist Smith Vocational. On the softball diamond, Frontier will host Agawam while Mahar will travel to Granby to take on the Rams. 

The remainder of teams will get their seasons underway next week, with plenty of intriguing early season matchups on tap.
