Regarding the July 31 article [“Indigenous celebration helps change the energy of historic area”], the article implies that the Turner raid on the Indian gathering at the “falls”— on Connecticut River — took place on the south shoreline above the cataract; “the land where the festival will be held ... ” Recorded historical fact shows the incursion took place on the north bank, where presently, the enclave of Riverside, Gill, is located. The south shoreline area above the “falls” is presently the village of Turners Falls, (founded 1868) town of Montague. A minimal indigenous occupation of the south shoreline area is noted. In 1676 the entire area was wilderness.
