Judith Fusonie: The lives we’re living

All that is happening in our world today is totally overwhelming many people of my generation. I am aware of the statement that the only thing you can count on in life is change, and people who are the happiest are the ones who can accept and adapt to change.

However, my “awareness of the world” began during the 1950s, and all that has come about in our society since then has my head spinning. It is hard to see how I can balance my own experiences growing up with the world as it is today. So many great things have been with the world as it is today. So many great things have been accomplished, but with each new idea there comes the responsibility of maintaining the good side and not letting the bad take over.

With such fast pace for our young people today, I am fearful they are missing out on some of the life lessons I learned while growing up. These are lessons that showed the value of a work ethic, saving instead of spending, paying cash instead of buying with a credit card, etc.

I appreciate the valuable lessons I learned from my parents while growing up. The world today is in a whirlwind of opportunities for good and bad habits. What are we as adults teaching our young people by the lives we are living? A wonderful book, “The Boys in the Boat,” demonstrates several positive lessons for young people. I recommend it. Everyone should read it.

I am sure I am not the only senior citizen who feels a little disoriented by this world … and wonders what our young grandchildren will be facing as they grow up. May the world be kind to them, help them get a good college education without such huge debt, help them to find out that jobs bring more than financial benefits into their lives, and teach them the “Golden Rule”: Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.
