I want to thank Sheriff Christopher Donelan for his dedicated service to Franklin County. I was fortunate to start my career in education under his leadership, during which he went beyond the typical call of duty to create high-quality programs for those incarcerated in our county jail. His initiatives, many offering college credits through GCC and Amherst College, not only improved the lives of participants but also made our community safer by reducing recidivism and expanding economic opportunities.

Sheriff Donelan’s impact extended beyond those he directly served. He fostered opportunities for young professionals like teachers, correctional officers, social workers and nurses to build meaningful careers in Franklin County. His leadership encouraged innovation, allowing us to engage in practices that have since become national gold standards in public safety.

While we expect elected officials to nurture talent, Sheriff Donelan took unique risks to establish one of the most humane and restorative law enforcement institutions in the country. His vision for modernization not only improved our community but also provided countless professionals with skills and experiences that will sustain our livelihoods for years.

As one of many whose life was enriched by his work, I wish Sheriff Donelan a fulfilling retirement. He can take pride in knowing that his dedication and moral courage have left a lasting legacy in Franklin County.
