Local Roundup: Mahar’s Abduli Gilmore reaches semifinals at Div. 3 state wrestling meet

Mahar’s Abduli Gilmore remains in contention heading into Saturday during the MIAA Div. 3 state wrestling tournament.
Gilmore won both his matches on Friday to earn a spot in the semifinals at 113, where he’ll take on No. 1 seed Colin Kinne of Monument for a spot in the finals on Saturday at Wakefield High School.
Gilmore opened the day with a third period pin against Mohawk Trail’s Landon Purington. He then defeated Tewksbury’s Angelo Desisto, 7-5, in the quarterfinals.
Frontier’s Wyatt Finch and Conner Hoffman also recorded wins in the championship bracket on Friday. Finch defeated Holliston’s Bavly Mikhail by pin in the first round in his opening match at 113, but fell to Melrose’s Michael Thomas in the quarterfinals.
Hoffman faced off with Mahar’s Xander Roberts in his opening match at 170 and walked away with a 6-1 win to advance to the quarterfinals. He fell to Bristol County’s Malakai Risotti in the quarterfinals via third period pin.
Finch and Hoffman are still alive heading into Saturday in the consolation bracket. Athol’s Aiden Kirwan (160), Purington, Roberts, Mohawk Trail’s Will Van Vleet (220) and Redhawk Javion Cabrera (285) each won their consolation match to remain alive heading into Saturday.
Frontier 60, Southwick 37 — The Redhawks are one win away from locking up a spot in the Div. 4 state tournament.
Frontier (8-10) needed to win both its non-playoff games to finish with a .500 record to earn an automatic bid and got one of those victories on Friday, with Nico Fasulo dropping 23 points and Owen Babb adding seven points and 17 big rebounds as the Redhawks pulled away with a win at Goodnow Gymnasium.

Lee 54, Turners 52 — Jake Lavin came to life for the Thunder in the fourth quarter during a non-playoff contest against the Wildcats.
Lavin knocked down four 3’s in the frame, none bigger than the final one, sinking one from downtown to tie the game 52-52 with 10 seconds left, capping off a fourth quarter comeback for Turners.
Lee inbounded the ball, raced up court and knocked down a shot with two seconds left, however, with the Thunder falling in Turners on Friday.
Alex Quezada finished with 13 points, Logan Addison scored 11 points while Levin Prondecki and Jackson Cogswell both had five points for Turners.
Tony Hanna and David Conlon rolled the high single (105) while Kendall Schneider and Nick Gray rolled the high triple (273) in Sunday Scotch Doubles at the Shelburne Falls Bowling Alley this past week.
Sienna Laire had the women’s high single (95) and Missy Finn had the high triple (255) while John Herron rolled the men’s high single (119) and Bob Jillson had the high triple (326) in the Monday Mixed League. In the Wednesday Mixed League Jill Jablonski rolled the women’s high single (105), Karen Herzog had the high triple (285) while Jon Hall and Bob Hayward tied for the men’s high single (119) and triple (296).
In the Thursday Mixed Social Colleen Barrows had the women’s high single (118) and triple (315) while John Rodgers had the men’s high single (144) and triple (315).

Registration for Greenfield Minor League Baseball is now open.
All registration is done online (GMLB.org). The cost is $100 per player, $75 for a second sibling and $50 for each additional sibling. Registration closes on Feb. 28.
Evaluations will be on Saturday, March 18 at Franklin County Technical School with times still to be determined. Team practices will begin on April 1. Any questions can be sent to gmlbcalripken@gmail.com.
Berkshire Highland Pentathlon
The Berkshire Highlands Pentathlon is returning to Charlemont in April.
The Pentathlon is scheduled to take place on April 1 at Berkshire East Mountain Resort. The race includes five events: a 4.5-mile trail run, an 18-mile bicycle road ride, a two-mile paddle, a two-mile adventure run and a two-mile adventure run and climb down the ski mountain. Participants can choose to complete the course as a team or solo.
Nearly 200 athletes participated last year, with 60 signed up for the 2023 event so far. There will be food and raffle prizes to winners in each category. There is a discounted entry fee for family teams and under-19 entrants.
Online registration is available now at BikeReg.com. Race day registration will be available, with the race still looking for volunteers. This year’s benefactor is the Mary Lyon Foundation.
