Local roundup: Big 2nd half sends Mahar boys basketball past Greenfield

Gavin Sullivan and the Mahar boys basketball team turned it on in the second half on Saturday.

Sullivan scored 10 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter, and the visiting Senators outscored Greenfield by a 39-21 margin after intermission en route to an impressive 56-45 Hampshire League South victory at Nichols Gymnasium in Greenfield.

Mahar (9-5) won its third game in a row and sixth in the past seven outings. It has held all seven of those opponents to 50 points or fewer during that span.

Greenfield (8-5) led 24-17 at halftime, limiting the Sens to just two points in the second quarter. Mahar rallied to take a 34-31 lead entering the fourth quarter, and outscored the Wave by a 22-14 margin over the final eight minutes. Sullivan hit 8-of-11 free throws in the fourth quarter to help seal the deal.

Connor Sluder led the way offensively with 17 points for Mahar, while Will Barnes added 12 points, nine coming in the second half. Lucas Isrow tossed in seven in the victory.

Greenfield’s Jackson Campbell paced the hosts with a team-high 12 points, hitting four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. Jon Breor added 10 points and Caleb Thomas followed with seven.

Hockey

Greenfield 7, Southwick 0 – Matthew Lavoine netted a hat trick, helping the Green Wave capture their fourth win in a row on Saturday behind a 7-0 shutout of Southwick in Wright Division action at Amelia Park Arena in Westfield.

Greenfield improved to 13-4 overall, 8-1 in the Wright Division. The team will secure at least a share of the league title if it beats Southwick again when they meet in Greenfield on Feb. 18.

Other goal scorers in Saturday’s win were Matt Garvin, Sammy Knight, Hunter Smith and Jamison Baleno. Assists were credited to Lavoine, Garvin, Brodie Gagne, Jake Jurek, Jayson Smith, Jack Laurie and Dylan Archer.

Greenfield goalie Joshua Bordeaux stopped all 16 shots he faced, posting the team’s fourth shutout of the season. The Wave outshot the Rams by a 43-16 margin.

Next up is a Saturday night independent game against West Springfield on Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at Collins-Moylan Arena.

Wrestling

Mahar 36, FC Tech 34 – The Senators won five of the nine matches contested, capturing a tight dual win over the weekend.

Picking up victories on the mat for the Senators were Domanic Cacciolfi (138 pounds), Tristen Gaj (152), Luke Chiodo (160), Xander Roberts (170) and Cameron Doyle (195).

Franklin Tech received wins from Carsten Couture (106), Zaydrien Alamed (126), Dillan Gagnon (132) and Joshua Lynde (285).

Frontier 42, South Hadley 36
Smith Voc 35, Frontier 30 –
 Jake Mattson needed just 11 seconds to earn a pin at 195 pounds against South Hadley, as the Redhawks competed in a multi-school meet on Saturday at East Longmeadow High School.

Javion Cabrera also earned a first-round pin at 285 pounds for the Hawks, which received wins on the mat from Conner Hoffman (170) and Tavo Vincent-Warner (132).

Youth basketball

Greenfield Suburban 

A balanced scoring effort propelled Greenfield past Pioneer, 48-31, in a grades 5 and 6 Suburban League boys basketball game on Saturday.

Mahir Patel scored eight points to pace Greenfield, while Isaac Tripp and Ethan St. Clair each registered six points.

Ethan Burgh scored 15 points and PJ Brodeur added nine for Pioneer.

Cornhole

Hitchcock Brewing tourney

The team of Fred Llewelyn and Jon Snow captured the top spot in the Sunday cornhole tournament at Hitchcock Brewing Company in Bernardston.

George Cooke and Eric Oakes finished second in the tourney.
