Jackson Caron and Deion Brewington continued their stellar indoor track seasons for Greenfield High School on Sunday.

Caron won the 1,000 meters and Brewington took first in the shot put as the Green Wave competed in PVIAC Indoor Track Meet No. 5 at Smith College in Northampton.

Caron crossed with a winning time of 2 minutes, 59.51 seconds, and Brewington’s top heave of 39 feet, 8 inches bested the field.

Brewington also took third in the 300 (41.71) and sixth in the 55 (7.16), while Caron also nabbed third in the 1,000 meters (5:00.65).

Athol’s Anthony Lopez-Hippler was the runner-up in the high jump (5-7), while Mohawk Trail’s Chay Mojallali finished fifth in the event (5-5).

Lopez-Hippler added a ninth-place finish in the 300, while Mojallali added two top 10 finishes in the shot put (eighth, 33-1) and 55-meter hurdles (seventh, 9.81).

Greenfield freshman Alex Scotera was fourth in the 2-mile (13:12.42), while other local top 10 finishers included Greenfield’s Mason Youmell (10th in 55 hurdles and seventh in 600), Mohawk Trail’s Emerson Spence (fifth, 600) and Athol’s Raydin Sousa (eighth, 300).

Mohawk Trail senior Savannah Simmons paced the locals on the girls side during Sunday’s meet. Simmons ran to a third-place finish in the 1-mile (6:30.55) and also registered a sixth-place finish in the 1,000 meters (3:52.84).

Lily Jenks was ninth for the Warriors in the 55-meter hurdles (11.84), and Ella Thompson cracked the top 10 with a 10th-place finish in the 600 (2:23.37).

Athol’s Sydney Gauvin was sixth in the shot put (25-3), and teammate Karleigh Chase took 10th (22-3).

Greenfield’s Layla Prescott finished ninth in the shot put (22-9½). 

Boys basketball

Mahar 51, Chicopee 45 – Trailing 37-31 after three quarters, the Senators saved their best for last on Saturday.

Mahar outscored Chicopee by a 20-8 margin over the final eight minutes, rallying for a key 51-45 independent victory.

“We needed this game badly today,” Mahar coach Chad Softic said. “There is just no let up in the schedule and it was ugly but we persevered.”

Lucas Isrow led the offensive effort with 14 points, followed by Gavin Sullivan with 12 points. Will Barnes, Hunter Martin and Connor Sluder all tossed in seven points for the Senators (6-4), which travel to Pioneer on Tuesday night.

“I think we can build off of our fourth quarter where Lucas and Gavin were able to settle down, stay composed and both of them made plays down the stretch,” Softic said. “In the past we've struggled with the ball pressure so it was encouraging. Connor also   picked up a huge charge when they could have extended [the lead] to eight early in the fourth.”

 Hockey

Assabet Valley 4, Greenfield 1 – Matthew Lavoine tallied Greenfield’s lone goal in a 4-1 independent loss on the road at Navin Arena in Marlborough on Saturday.

Derek Wissmann and Hunter Smith had the assists  for the Green Wave (9-4), which lost for the first time since Dec. 27 against East Longmeadow. Greenfield had won five in a row entering Saturday.

It was the eighth win in a  row for Assabet Valley (9-4), which sat at No. 17 in the most recent MIAA Division 4 Power Rankings. The Green Wave were slotted at No. 27.

Greenfield stays on the road to play at Wright Division foe Mount Everett on Thursday night.

Wrestling

Frontier 39, Northampton 24
Holyoke 42, Frontier 24
Chicopee 42, Frontier 21 – The Redhawks went 1-2 in a quad meet over the weekend.

Frontier’s Jocelyn Antes picked up a win over Chicopee and also nabbed a forfeiture against Northampton. Wyatt Finch earned pins against Chicopee and Holyoke and also won via forfeit against Northampton.

Ian Paciorek won 6-0 against Holyoke, and Frontier’s Tavo Vincent Warner won two tight decisions over Holyoke (13-10) and Northampton (11-9).

Connor Hoffman and Jake Mattson each went 3-0 on the weekend, while Jonathan Malloy and Konnor James each won forfeit victories against Northampton.

South Shore 48, Mahar 36
Dedham 46, Mahar 27 – Abduli Gilmore (113 pounds) and Domanic Cacciolfi (138) notched multiple victories to power the Senators in tournament action on Saturday.

Other Mahar winners included Xander Roberts (170), Colby Chiasson (132), Sayyid Roberts (145), Luke Chiodo (160) and Riley Murphy (170).

Mount Everett 42, Mohawk Trail 22 – Connor Herzig notched a 12-1 major decision at 126 pounds to propel the Warriors on Saturday.

Seamus Collins, William VanVleet and Izaya Romer took wins via forfeiture for Mohawk Trail.

Wilmington 42, FC Tech 36 – Zaydrien Alamed (126), Cameron May (160) and Joshua Lynde (285) all picked up wins in matches contested for the Eagles on Saturday.

Deerfield results

The Big Green swept swim meets at Choate, with the boys notching a 106-80 decision and the girls team securing a 109-76 win to highlight a full Saturday for the programs.

The girls squash team blanked Westminster, 7-0, while the boys team beat both St. George’s (7-0) and Tabor (6-1).

The boys basketball team was edged by Andover, 71-67, and the girls team dropped a 66-30 decision. The girls hockey team fell 2-0, and the boys team dropped a 5-3 decision at Choate.

Youth basketball

Suburban League

 Jonathan Bones scored 22 points, powering Turners Falls to a 43-39 victory over Pioneer in a grades 5 and 6 Suburban League boys basketball game over the weekend.

Cooper Hobbs followed with 8 points for Turners, while Tyreek Rivera tossed in six points in a strong all-around game and Carmelo Bashaw played well defensively to go with four points.

Athol seeks spring coaches

Athol High School is looking for a varsity softball coach as well as a boys volleyball coach for this spring.

David M. Petrin Alumni Hockey Game

The 30th annual David M. Petrin Alumni Hockey Game will be held Saturday, Feb. 18 at 4 p.m. at Collins-Moylan Arena in Greenfield. The game will feature Greenfield High School and Green Wave alumni.

All GHS and Green Wave hockey alumni are welcome to play, with roster spots still available. Rosters are limited to 30 skaters and two goalies. Interested alumni should call Larry Petrin (413-773-9250) and leave their name, telephone number and year of graduation.
