Indoor Track: Deion Brewington, Ben Cachiguango capture victories at PVIAC Meet No. 4

Ben Cachiguango and Deion Brewington showed their mettle against the best Western Massachusetts track and field athletes on Sunday at Smith College.
Cachuguano, a Frontier Regional School sophomore, won the 55-meter hurdles and was the runner-up in the 55-meter dash at the early portion of PVIAC Indoor Track Meet No. 4 in Northampton, powering the Redhawks.
Brewington, a Greenfield senior, also captured an individual victory when he bested the field in the shot put in the late session on Sunday. His top throw of 40 feet, 4¾ inches was more than enough to nab the top spot.
Cachiguango crossed the line in first place in the 55 hurdles with a time of 8.90 seconds, and posted a second-place time of 7.00 seconds in the 55 dash. He also added a fourth-place finish in the 300 meters (40.89).
Mohawk Trail sophomore Chay Mojallali was the runner-up in the high jump (5 feet, 8 inches), and also took sixth in the 55 hurdles (9.38).
Frontier’s Evan Hedlund continued to run well in the distance events, and the eighth grader was the runner-up in the 2-mile during the early session (10:40). Teammate Aidan Valderrama was third in the high jump (5-4) and third in the 1,000 meters (3:01.02), and Frontier sophomore William Reading nabbed eighth in the 600 (1:41).
Mohawk Trail’s Emerson Spence (eighth, 1,000 meters) and Tanner Biagini (ninth, 600) added top 10 finishes on the afternoon.
Mahar sophomore Mathieu Soucy posted two top 10 performances, as he was seventh in the 300 (42.12) and ninth in the 55 meters (7.32), while teammate Jeffrey LaPlante added a ninth-place run in the 1-mile (5:31).

In the girls’ early session, Frontier continued to show its team balance en route to another strong performance.
Leah Gump was the runner-up in both the 1-mile (5:58.43) and 2-mile (12:36.35), while Caroline Crocker took second in the 55 hurdl es (9.29) and fourth in the long jump (14-11½).
Senior Sophia Leone cracked the top 10 in three events, including a second-place run in the 300 meters (45.51). She was also fourth in the 55 (7.97) and ninth in the 55 hurdles (10.64).
Senior Summer Sobieski was another three-time top 10 finisher on Sunday. Sobieski took second in the high jump (4-8) to go with a fifth-place showing in the 55 hurdles (10.48) and a sixth-place performance in the long jump (13-10½).

Mahar’s Stellina Moore was sixth overall in the high jump (4-4) and 10th in the long jump (13-1½).
Mohawk Trail was led by senior Savannah Simmons, who was third in the 2-mile (13:57) and fifth in the 1,000 (3:53.34). Junior Sophia Goodnow threw the shot put to a seventh-place performance (24-8).
After winning two events a week ago, Greenfield’s Jackson Caron put together a pair of third-place finishes in the late session of Sunday’s meet at Smith College.
The Green Wave junior took third place in both the 1-mile (5:02.83) and 1,000 meters (3:00).
Freshman Alex Scotera wound up ninth in the 2-mile (13:15).
Greenfield junior Ava Fortin notched two top 10 finishes on Sunday. Fortin was fifth in the 1-mile (6:22.86) to go with an eighth-place performance in the 1,000 meters (3:41.65).
Athol’s Karleigh Chase and Sydney Gauvin both cracked the top five in the shot put on Sunday. Chase finished fourth overall with a top throw of 24 feet, 11 inches, while Gauvin was right behind in fifth place with a throw of 24-10.
Athol’s Anthony Lopez-Hippler paced the boys team with a 10th-place performance in the high jump (5-0).
