Roundup: NMH boys soccer falls to Taft in shootout during NEPSAC Class A quarterfinals

There wasn’t much separating third-seeded Taft School and sixth-seeded Northfield Mount Hermon in the quarterfinals of the 2024 NEPSAC Class A boys soccer tournament on Wednesday. 

Taft opened the scoring but NMH responded with a goal just before the end of the first half, with the game tied at one at intermission. Neither squad produced a goal in the second half and during the two overtime periods, neither the Hoggers or the Rhinos lit up the scoreboard, with the contest going to a shootout. 

NMH was stopped on its first shootout attempt but made its next two while Taft made its opening three to take a 3-2 lead. The Hoggers tied it with its fourth attempt and managed to make a save on the Rhinos’ fourth shot to tie things 3-3 going into the fifth and final attempt. 

NMH was stopped on its fifth attempt while Taft made its PK, sending the Rhinos to the semifinals with a 4-3 shootout win. 

Taft advanced to face No. 2 Berkshire School in the semis. 

Field hockey

Taft School 5, Deerfield Academy 0 — The sixth-seeded Big Green were unable to produce a goal in their NEPSAC Class A quarterfinal game against third-seeded Taft, falling in Watertown, Conn. on Wednesday. 

DA closed its season with a 12-5 record while Taft advanced to play second-seeded Hotchkiss in the semifinals. 

Volleyball

Loomis Chaffee 3, Deerfield Academy 1 — The sixth-seeded Big Green earned a set win against the third-seeded Pelicans in Windsor, Conn., on Wednesday but Loomis was able to pull away with a 3-1 victory in the NEPSAC Class A quarterfinals.

Deerfield Academy closed its season with a 15-5 record while Loomis advanced to play No. 2 Phillips Exeter in the semis.
