WINCHENDON – Treasurer/Collector Paul Redmond has been fired following an investigation into the alleged theft of funds from Town Hall.

According to an announcement posted to the town website, officials were made aware of the alleged theft on Sept. 10.

“The town immediately investigated this allegation and determined, based on several interviews, that the cash had been stolen by the town treasurer,” the statement read. “The town thereafter took prompt action to terminate the treasurer’s employment.”

The decision to terminate Redmond’s employment was announced Tuesday.

Redmond could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Town Manager Bill McKinney told the Athol Daily News that Winchendon Police went to Gardner District Court on Tuesday to seek a criminal complaint against Redmond. He said he was not free to disclose the amount of cash the former treasurer is alleged to have stolen. It was not specified if the money was taken from a specific source.

Winchendon Police Lt. Kevin Wolske said that felony charges sought in the criminal complaint include larceny over $1,200 and larceny from a building. Wolske said he expects the complaint to be issued, and Redmond to be summonsed to court for arraignment by the end of the week.

“The town now intends to pursue all legal remedies, including seeking a criminal complaint in district court, to recover the stolen funds and ensure that the responsible parties are held accountable,” the statement on the town’s website reads.
