Students in Christine Hoegen’s second-grade classroom created a colorful and creative array of posters, each celebrating the fact Royalston Community School students have hit their 100th day of the 2018-19 school year. Each student took the stage with their poster, and before a cafetorium full of schoolmates and family members, gave a brief explanation of their original art.

Teacher Cindy Drouin explained the basics of a circuit, and details on how to apply copper tape to a project being worked on as part of “It’s Electric,” an after school program on electricity. The program is funded by Royalston Academy Inc. and will continue through March at the Royalston Community School.

Quite the crowd showed up for the Village School’s opening day on Sept. 5, which began with a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the opening of a new, $2 million building. Faculty and staff welcomed 65 students for the 2018-2019 school year. Located on the grounds of the former Camp Caravan, the independent day school focuses the curriculum on kindness, and contact with nature.

Ladies’ Benevolent Society tours school, names entryway

Maddison Blake is one of 17 students really diggin’ Royalston Community School’s after-hours garden club, led by second grade teacher Christine Hoegen. The club meets weekly through the end of the school year, with members planting seeds, transplanting seedlingsand weeding the school’s raised beds.

Orange, Royalston receive ‘green’ designation, money

There’s little room for error when riding on two wheels, with no external protection other than outer clothing. Caitlin J. Barclay, a graduate of Central Massachusetts Safety Council’s Basic Rider and Advanced Rider courses, is shown on her way to a past Red Knights Motorcycle Club weekend on the Cape. She is properly outfitted, wearing a DOT/SNELL-approved helmet, a motorcycle jacket of abrasion-resistant fabric with hard-shell spine, shoulder and elbow inserts, Scotchlite reflective accents, leather chaps, over-the-ankle motorcycle boots, full-fingered gloves and eye protection — sunglasses and a clear shield for nighttime driving.
