ATHOL — Athol is now featured on a new online map of Lithuanian locations along the East Coast.
The first-ever map of the Lithuanian-American heritage, funded by the Republic of Lithuania, commemorates its centenary, which is being celebrated this month.
Three Lithuanian locations are mapped in Athol: St. Francis Lithuanian Church, a steel Lithuanian traditional cross in front of the church on Main Street and the American-Lithuanian naturalization club on South Street.
Augustinas Zemaitis, leader of the mapping project, said, “It was interesting to discover such well-kept Lithuanian sites in Athol, as the city is far from all the other areas of Lithuanian immigration, with the closest one being in Worcester. Athol Lithuanian heritgae was therefore rather under-researched, which we aim to change.”
The new online map includes pictures and a story about each Lithuanian location. All this content was created by a team of experts who visited Athol in September 2017.
It is expected that the bilingual Lithuanian-English map will encourage tourism, as Lithuanians, Lithuanian-Americans and Americans who are interested in the off-the-beaten-path minority cultures would all come to visit the mapped sites.
