Early Monday snowfall left commuters navigating slippery roads yesterday morning.

Route 2 in Phillipston saw two vehicle crashes, one heading east and the other westbound, said State Trooper Paul Sullivan. The accidents caused the roads to close for several hours, reopening at 10:51 a.m., according to Sullivan.

Two individuals from the westbound crash near exit 18 were taken to Athol Memorial Hospital with serious injuries, according to police. The Athol Fire Department responded to the scene with two ambulances.

The National Weather Service forecast reported snow began falling around 7 a.m., accumulating 1 inch throughout the morning.

Orange did not prepare the roads prior to the early snowfall, said Colin Killay, the superintendent of the town’s Highway, Parks and Cemeteries Department. He said the department, in preparation for cooler temperature, plans to salt any roads that may freeze overnight. No accidents occurred in Orange Monday, according to the Police Department.
