ATHOL .— National Library Week will be observed at the Athol Public Library through Saturday with the theme being “Libraries Lead.”

According to library officials, National Library Week is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and library workers, especially the local ones. It’s also a time to promote library use and support –from free access to books and online resources for families to library business centers that help support entrepreneurship and retraining.

Athol Public Library will celebrate National Library Week by being fine-free all week. Patrons are encouraged to return any overdue library materials this week and have their overdue fines waived. (The library regrets that it cannot waive replacement costs for lost or damaged items.)

The library will also have prizes for borrowers and offer the following free events:

Monday: LEGO Club and Teen Card Game Club.

Tuesday: Adult Chess Club and Mystery Books Discussion.

Wednesday: Preschool Story Time, Knitting and the Delvena Theater Company’s production, “Louisa’s Girls.”

Thursday: Baby and Toddler Time, Teen Chess Club, and four short films on soil carbon.

Friday: Story Walk, Teen Updos with Carl, and Minecraft for third- and fourth-graders.

Some programs require registration, so call 978-249-9515 for details and to register.

American Ballet Theatre principal dancer Misty Copeland is serving as 2018 National Library Week honorary chairwoman. National Library Week 2018 will mark the 60th anniversary of the first event, sponsored in 1958. This national celebration is sponsored by the American Library Association and observed in libraries across the country each April.

All types of libraries – school, public, academic and special – participate every year.

Celebrations during National Library Week include: National Library Workers Day, celebrated Tuesday. It’s a day for library staff, users, administrators and Friends groups to recognize the valuable contributions made by all library workers.

National Bookmobile Day is celebrated on Wednesday.

It’s a day to recognize the contributions of our nation’s bookmobiles and the dedicated professionals who make quality bookmobile outreach possible in their communities.

Take Action for Libraries Day, a national library advocacy effort is observed on Thursday.
